Modals of Permission
PERMISSION- an authorization granted for
something or a formal content
Lesson for Today
Modals
- Are helping verbs that denote intention
or feeling of the speaker. They indicate
likelihood, permission, ability, possibility,
suggestions, prohibition, advice, order
or request. It is always accompanied
with a verb in its base form:
Modal + (base form) =can eat, should
walk, may pay
Students can use a
dictionary for this
activity.
You can pet my dog.

Example: Can I help you with that?

COULD
-used as a more polite and formal modal in asking permission
-expresses a statement saying that somebody is allowed to do
something in the past but not in the present
Example: Could I borrow your book?
I remember we could go out and play as long as we want
to because the sun wasn’t that hot back then.

A. Read and analyze each statement. Use the appropriate modal
verb of permission .Encircle the modal verb.
Example : Tell your friend that he has permission to have another
biscuit.

1. You’re a child and you formally ask a teacher for permission
to leave the room.
2. You ask your mom for permission to go to a party tonight.
You are polite but don’t use ‘may’.
