Tools to Enhance Your Research
How to give title and abstract when you have only the area in your mind
Search at least 50 papers in your area, read all of them even if you are not understanding
completely
Decide which one is more interesting to you and narrow down the area.
Now, decide the title
Refine your collection such that they are exactly matching with your title and read all of them
completely to find the research gap.
Now, you will be able to define the problem, title and abstract
Reading these papers, understanding , organizing them, taking notes , discussing with others,
implementing and testing will require more time.

Mendeley is a cloud-based free reference manager software
released by them which is widely used in academic research
Mendeley was purchased by Elsevier in 2013
Mendeley helps to organize your reference papers and create Bibliography (reference
section in your paper)
Now it supports funded research also (New).
Collects funding opportunities from over 2000 organizations across the Globe
Mendeley is also a social network
It helps to collaborate with researchers all over the world.

1. You can view your h-index, citations etc. related to Scopus - Click on the icon at
top right corner to view your profile
2. You can add folder and store your PDF reference papers collected
3. You can also store web sites you referred
4. You can see the details of PDF, Edit, add tags and take notes
5. You can search from the PDFs you have stored based on the tags and keywords
or filters
6. You can also search papers from Scopus repository and add them in your Library
folder for reading - Select Feed / Suggest tab

Web Importer helps to Import papers, web pages and other documents
directly into your reference library from search engines and academic

2 GB free storage space compared to Zotero’s 300 MB space
You can also import papers from other reference managers

You can store your reference papers (PDFs) in the Web / cloud and organize
them in folders.
Reference Manager will automatically extract Title, authors name, year of

paper.
You can search the PDFs from these folders (enhanced searching)

Google scholar has excellent resources. It is an academic search engine.
Login Google Scholar
Click on top left icon and choose articles
Search with a term. Filter with year, or Use advanced search (Click top left icon)
Search with exact phrase. Word at the beginning has more weightage than at the end
Click the star under a the paper to add to library
To cite papers , click on the symbol ,, and copy the citation with style to the word
Arrange in descending order using AZ↓
Use Follow button to setup alert

How many pages you have to write? What you have to write? What is the
structure of a research paper?
1. Short paper /Letter / Brief communication - 4 to 6 pages – 10-12 references
2. Regular / Normal paper/ Full length paper - 8-15 pages (in one journal 8 or 10
pages, another 25-35 pages double spacing) -25-35 references
3. Review papers – 15-20 pages - 50-200 references

Tools to Enhance Your Research
Sentences should be clear and focused without spelling and grammatical
mistakes.
It should specify the novelty in the paper.
It should also clearly specify what was achieved finally.
Reference papers or your own abbreviations should not be given in the
abstract.
Rewrite the abstract already written based on these points such that it is
suitable for the journal selected.
Include key words which will be more suitable for the journal and attract
the readers.

Sometimes scholars tend to submit the same paper to two or three journals at
a time. This is not an ethical practise. This can be easily tracked. If identified, your
paper will be summarily rejected even after review.
If it is identified after published, the paper will be marked as ‘retracted’. It will
be a black mark in your research life.

Submitting the paper to the Journal
• Check carefully the requirements of the journal once again
• Create ORCID (Open Researchers and Contributor ID) account: You
will get an ID that distinguishes you from other researchers. It is free
to register and use.
• Editorial Manager - A cloud-based manuscript submission and peer-
review tracking system. Many journals are using this system.
• Have separate files for title page, manuscript, tables in one file,
images in another file and a cover letter. Go to the submission page
of the particular journal follow the instructions there.

How to Publish Research Papers in Reputed Journals?
If your friend has published in one journal don’t think that your
paper will also be accepted in the same journal
Based on the abstract and title prepared, you can choose a
suitable journal.
List the journals available in the area in which you are working
and the type of the paper you want to publish.
Some journals will publish only review papers
Few journals will publish only short papers.
Remove those journals from the list if you want to publish only
full length research papers. All journals will publish review papers,
but the acceptance rate will be very low. Only invited reviews will
be published.

Confirm that the aim and scope of the journal matches with
your abstract. Remove the other journals.
You can also use journal selection tools such as Elsevier
Journal Finder or Springer Journal Suggester
Based on these suggestions and the journal list you already
have, refine the list by adding or removing the journals.

How to Publish Research Papers in Reputed Journals?
Decide whether you want to publish in the journals indexed
in SCI/SCIE/ESCI/Scopus/ICI
The details of your paper will be stored by the following
agencies.
Web of Science (Clarivate), Scopus (Elsevier) and Indian
Citation Index
If others are citing your paper, it will be updated by these
agencies. So these indexing agencies help to monitor the
quality of the paper, quality of the research done by you,
your department and your Institution.

SCI – Science Citation Index – highly reputed – will have good impact
factor
SCIE - Science Citation Index Expanded – same as SCI – good impact

Scopus (Elsevier)
Compared to Web of Science, Scopus indexes more number of
journals and conferences.
ICI (Indian Citation Index)
It is maintained by M/s DIVA ENTERPRISES Pvt. Ltd
Mostly papers indexed in Web of Science will also be indexed in the
Scopus and the ICI by the Journal publishers. But the reverse is not
true.

How to Publish Research Papers in Reputed Journals?
Based on the indexing requirement ,you can keep or remove the
journals from your list. Now you will have a small list of journals
suitable for publishing your research work.
Some open access journals will collect publication fee from $100
to $600 and make your paper accessible to anybody at free of
cost.
Some journals will provide an option for publishing papers as
open access ($1500-$3000). If you don’t opt for open access still
your paper will be published. But it is not freely accessible for the
reader and he/she has to pay.
In the above two cases the quality is not compromised. Most of
the journals take 1-2 years to accept and publish your paper.

How to Publish Research Papers in Reputed Journals?
But some predatory journals collect huge money ($1500- $3000). They also
hake a journal website or create a fake website and send personalized mails
to individuals saying that they are open access publisher. They are not at all
maintaining the quality and sometimes they are not reviewing papers. With
a short time, they accept the paper. These journals are not at all considered
by research community / University. Identifying such journals becomes
difficult and time consuming.
By getting advice from your supervisor or from your friends, you can
identify such journals from your list.
So finally you will have a very small list of journals (5-10) in your area.
You go to the websites of these journals and note the impact factor,
average time taken for reviewing and publishing and also read some of the
papers published to get an idea about what is expected by the journal.
Then choose the journal.

After selecting the journal, you search for the papers
published in that journal in your topic.
Include those papers in your reference section and
remove some of the papers already you have if they
are not exactly matching with your current topic.
Now identify how your paper is different and fine tune
the title and abstract such that your work is a novel
one.
All the papers given by you in the reference section should be
cited in the text (body) of your paper.

How to Publish Research Papers in Reputed Journals?
Type the references according to the format required by the journal.
It is better to use a reference manager tool to maintain the
references.
If you want to introduce a new reference in the middle of your
document, then you will have to change all the citation numbers.
You may also change your mind and try to submit to some other
better journal after writing the paper. Changing the reference /
citation format to that journal is a difficult one. Reference Managers
will help in this case

free…. Zotero
Download, Create Account / Sign in , Left side Add > import
document. Open word doc . Go to references menu, Insert
citations.

Choosing Journal
Understand the aim and scope of the journal by reading articles published in that journal
Understand the style of writing and submission process of that journal
Write a draft of your paper, discuss with others then refine title and abstract.
Read instructions to authors, and page, word limit
Include Name and affiliation of all authors with correct spelling
Format to the journal’s style
Include supplementary materials such as datasets, presentations video and audio files. This will help to
increase your citations.
