2. ENERGY
Energy causes the changes we see around
us.
Our society uses more energy all the
time.
There are many types of energy, such as
mechanical, chemical, heat and
electrical.
Energy can be transformed.

3. SOURCE OF ENERGY
Renewable sources of energy do not run out.
Examples are firewood, sunlight and the wind.
Non-renewable sources of energy run out as
they are used up. Examples are coal, natural
gas or petroleum. Coal, natural gas and
petroleum are called fossil fuels.

5. SOURCES OF ENERGY: FOSSIL FUELS
Traditionally, most of our energy comes from
combustible fossil fuels, such as natural gas or
oil/petroleum.
Two main types of energy are used in everyday
life: electrical energy and combustible
energy or fuel energy such as petrol, diesel
fuel and natural gas.
The power plants that produce most of our
electrical energy are thermal power plants.
These burn coal, natural gas or petroleum
products.

7. SOURCES OF ENERGY: FOSSIL FUELS
The fossil fuels are coal, oil/petroleum
and natural gas.
They are fuels because they release heat
energy when they are burned.
They are fossil fuels because they
were formed from the remains of
living organisms millions of years ago.

10. SOURCES OF ENERGY: FOSSIL FUELS
Fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum
are a non-renewable source of energy.
Therefore if we use them, they will
eventually run out. Future generations
will not be able to use these sources of
energy.
Spain, like other countries, uses more
energy from combustible fuels than
any other type of energy.

14. SOURCES OF ENERGY: COAL & PETROLEUM
Advantages:
Easy to use. Fossil fuels are very easy to find.
Efficient. A major advantage of fossil fuels is their capacity to generate
huge amounts of electricity in just a single location. Power plants that
utilize gas are very efficient.
When coal is used in power plants, they are very cost effective. Coal is
also in abundant supply.
Transporting oil and gas to the power stations can be made through
the use of pipes making it an easy task.
Power stations that make use of fossil fuel can be constructed in
almost any location. This is possible as long as large quantities of fuel
can be easily brought to the power plants.
The technology we use to harness the energy in fossil fuels is well
developed. The main reason for this is that fossil fuels have been used
to power our world for many decades.

15. SOURCES OF ENERGY: COAL & PETROLEUM
Disadvantages:
Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy resources.
Unsustainable. Their supply is limited and they will eventually
run out. Fossil fuels do not renew themselves, while fuels such as wood
can be renewed endlessly.
Emits air pollution. Fossil fuels release carbon dioxide when they
burn, which adds to the greenhouse effect and increases global
warming. Of the three fossil fuels, for a given amount of energy released,
coal produces the most carbon dioxide and natural gas produces the
least.
Coal and oil release sulfur dioxide gas when they burn, which causes
breathing problems for living creatures and contributes to acid rain.
Accidents happen. They are not nearly as serious as accidents related
to nuclear power, but on the other hand, fossil fuels will never have the
safety of solar and wind.
