4. INTRODUCTION
Cotton, the 'White gold', is one of the important commercial
crops playing a key role in the economic, political and social
affairs of the world. Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows
in a boll, or protective capsule, around the seeds of cotton
plants of the genus Gossypium. The fiber is almost pure
cellulose. Under natural condition, the cotton balls will tend to
increase the dispersion of the seeds.
5. HARVESTING
Harvest is the process of gathering mature crops or parts of
crop from the fields. It is the act of obtaining the economic
part of crop or whole crop from the field as raw as it gets
physiologically or harvesting maturity.
7. Manual picking is slow but better preserves fiber characteristics of
cotton. Manual(hand picking) is very popular in small land holding
farm.
In the case of hand picking, it is possible to pick open bolls at
frequent intervals, and weather effects on the fiber, after bolls have
opened, can be minimized.
3-4 pickings/season are very common in many countries where
cotton is handpicked. After the first
picking the 15-20 days interval
is required for 2nd and 3rd picking.
MANUAL METHOD
8. • Manual harvesting takes more time than machine
harvesting.
• Man pick balls of one plant at a time.
• Man usually takes 9 minutes to pick 20 plants
• Pick 8 to 10 hours a day
• Food And water is used as fuel .
• Can pick 1/9 of a pound per day
• About 75 % of the cotton fiber is harvested by manual
harvesting all over the world because of low labor cost.
• Manually harvested cotton contains less trash and impurities
than machine harvested cotton.
FEATURES OF MANUAL HARVESTING METHOD
9. Hand harvesting some times causes heavy skin
damages or cut into hand.
Sometimes it
causes child labor.
DISADVANTAGES OF MANUAL HARVESTING
10. MECHANIZED METHOD
This is the mordern method of harvesting. In this method
machine is used for harvesting. This is popular in the
large size farm.It is more echonomic and time efficient
method of harvesting.
11. •Machine Harvesting: Machine harvesting means the
harvesting process by the help of manmade machinery.
•Machine harvesting is relatively faster than hand
harvesting .
•Machine picks four rows of plant at a time
•Takes 30 seconds to 1200 plants
•Can pick 24 hours a day
•Uses gasoline as fuel
•Can pick 100000 to 190000 pound per day
• About 25 % of the cotton fiber harvested by machine
because of high machine cost.
•Harvested by machine cotton contains more trash and
impurities than manually harvested cotton.
FEATURES OF MACHINE HARVESTING METHOD
12. 1. Machine harvesting machine is very expensive, So
it is not possible for the entry level cotton business
to harvest cotton fiber by picker or stripper
machine.
2. Contains more trash and impurities.
DISADVANTAGES OF MACHINE HARVESTING
