3. Introduction
 Steroidal alkaloids are those alkaloids which posses
cyclopentanopenanthrene nucleus
The important drugs of this group are
(A) Kurchi bark
(B) veratrums
Commonly found in Apocynaceae & Liliaceae

5. VERATRUMS: derived from Latin words “vere” which
mean truly and “ater” mean black
 Synonyms: American Hellebore, Green Hellebore,
American Veratrum, Indian poke
 Biological source: veratrum viride ,veratrum album
 Perennial herb
 Family: Liliaceae
 Dried rhizome are used

6. Geographical distribution:
 Found in Canada , USA , Georgia etc.
 Collection: Rhizome are dug out in autumn season,
cleaned, cut longitudinally and dried
 Chemical constituents: varies alkaloids have been
isolated from veratrum the important alkaloids are
jervine ,psedojervine rubijervine,

7. Cevadine , germitrine , germidine, veratralbine,
veratroidine, neogermitrine, neoprotoveratrine,
protoveratrine, etc.
Uses:
 Antihypertensive
 Use in convulsion(convulsion is condition in which the
body muscle contract & relax rapidly and repeatedly
which result an uncontrolled shaking of the body

8.  Mania:( abnormally elevated state characterized by such
symptoms increased irritability ,severe insomnia,
increased speech or volume of speech)
 Headache
 Insecticidal
 sedative
