6. The two fundamental points about the “Individual
Model Of Disability” are,
i. The problem of disability lies within the individual.
ii. The causes of disability stem from the functional limitations or
psychological disorders which are assumed to arise from
disability.
[These two points are underpinned by what might be called ‘ the
personal tragedy theory of disability’ which suggests that
disability is some terrible chance event which occurs at random to
unfortunate individuals. At present this principle is not accepted by
many. ]

8. Salient Features Of Individual
Model Of Disability
Individual model of disability recommends
caring and supporting the disabled instead of
treating or curing them.
Individual model of disability plead for the
segregation of the disabled from the normal people
and provide appropriate training or education for
rehabilitating them.

9. Drawbacks of individual model of disability
This model considers the source of disability lies within the
individual; it totally ignores the role of physical and social
environment i.e. It makes the individual responsible for his/her
disability and totally ignores the responsibility of the society.
The solution for the problems of disabled persons according to
this lies in segregating the disabled from the normal people and
taking care of them. This is against the democratic principles of the
present day world.
This model does not recommend treating the disabled on par
with the normal people and provide equal opportunities to them in
all fields of life.

10. This model considers disabled people as inferior to
others and as such develop a negative attitude in the
society.
This model ignores the responsibility of the state and
society, to address the issues of the disabled.
This model does not offer any suggestion for making
the disabled to participate in social life fully like any
other normal individual in the society.
