This document outlines five models of disability: the religious/moral model, biomedical model, functional model, environmental model, and sociopolitical model. It states that the functional, environmental, and sociopolitical models are interactive. It then provides descriptions of each model's key assumptions and how they define disability. The religious/moral model views disability as associated with sin or shame. The biomedical model locates problems within the individual. The functional model ties disability to an individual's functions. The environmental model poses that the environment causes or exaggerates disability. The sociopolitical model sees disability as a product of social and environmental barriers.
