2. Introduction:
Quebec model is a comprehensive explanatory model describing the
causes and consequences of disability.
According to it,
Individual personal factors ( consisting of organic systems and
capabilities)
Environmental factors(consisting of physical and social environment)
Interact with each other and shape the life habits of the individual.

4. Risk factor
• A risk factor is an element belonging to an individual or within the
environment that is likely to cause a disease, trauma or any other
disruption to a person’s integrity or development.

5. Personal factor
• Two kinds
• 1. organic system
• 2. capabilities
Even if the body organs are well structured but if the capabilities of
their functioning are less then also disease or disability may occur.
Personal factors correspond to the intrinsic characteristics such as age,
sex, socio-cultural identity, organic systems etc.

6. Capabilities
• Capability is defined as a person’s potential to accomplish a mental or
physical activity.
• A capability’s quality is measured on a scale ranging from ‘optimal
ability’ to ‘total disability’.
• If the capability of an individual is more then average, then the
individual is likely to have good helath, if is below the average then
disease or disability gets expressed.

7. Environment factor
• They are defined as physical or social dimensions that determine a
society’s organization and context.
• Physical environment consists of object, institution, various
equipments and appliances, facilities and opportunities to avail etc.
• Social environment refers to the attitudes, beliefs, customs, values,
habits of the people and their cultural heritage.

8. Life habits
• A life habit is defined as a daily activity or a social role valued by the
person or his/her socio cultural context according to his/her
characteristics (age, sex, socio-cultural identity)
• Life habits or performance in social life situations ensure a person’s
survival and well-being in his/her society throughout his/her entire
existence.
• It measure on a scale ranging from full social participation to a total
handicap situation.

9. Interaction
• Due to the reaction among the personal factor and environment factors i.e
due to their interaction, an individual’s life habits get shaped.
• These life habits may promote the helath of the individual or adversely
affect it causing disability or getting expressed as handicap.
• If a person enjoys good health, then his social participation will be optimal.
• Quebec model explains the causes of disability and their consequences.
• The Quebec model is very useful in treating the person with disability and
to formulate government polices for them.
