The Uyo Ring Road is an approximately
21 km long bypass road that connects the
Nwaniba Road and the further Outer Ring
Road in Uyo / Akwa Ibom State.
In 2011, Julius Berger Nigeria PLC was
awarded the construction contract for the
Phase 1 which includes the new construction
of 7,2 km road with median, shoulder, kerbs,
all necessary drainage works and the
construction of one (1) flyover at Olusegun
Obasanjo Way.
In February 2012, Julius Berger was then
awarded a variation for the construction of
two (2) outfall drains with a total lenght of
approximately 6,600 km. The scope of works
for the variation includes the construction
of crossings and fencing, as well as the
construction of service roads.
Due to unsuitable soil conditions, the flyover
consumed 278 pieces of reinforced precast
concrete piles, each with a length of 18 m,
completing the flyover with a total length of
150 m.
For the construction of the road, extensive
demolition works of existing structures
became necessary. All electrical installations
along the road were relocated or newly
erected by Julius Berger.
After detailed studies of the further traffic
loads, the strengthening of the road cross
section was recommended and adopted by
the State Government.
To achieve this, a 15 cm thick base-course
layer is placed. On top of the base course,
a 6 cm standard binder course layer plus
an additional second asphaltic binder
course layer of 6 cm is layed. On these two
binder course layers, the standard asphaltic
wearing course layer of 4 cm will be topped.
A drainage system of trapezoidal drains and
U-channels for road and surface drainage
was also fabricated and assembled by JBN.
Two (2) outfall drains with a complete length
of approximately 6600 m are required to
discharge the surface water.
In order for this project to be accomplished,
extensive demolition works of the existing
structures are necessary.
