PIS Uyo - Ikot Ekpene Road Phase I
1. Uyo-Ikot Ekpene-Ikot Umoh
Essien Road Phase 1,
Akwa Ibom State
Client:
Akwa Ibom State Ministry
of Works and Transport
Construction Period:
06/2012 – 05/2014
Services:
Construction of
approximately 15 km
dual carriageway and all
necessary drainage works.
The Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road is an approx.
25 km long federal road that connects the
cities of Uyo and Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom
State. By the end of 2011, Julius Berger
Nigeria PLC was awarded the contract for
the first phase of the dualisation of Uyo – Ikot
Ekpene Road which includes the dualisation
of the existing road with a total length of
approximately 15 km.
Due to further reviews of the traffic density
between Uyo and Ikot Ekpene, the
contract was awarded in 2011 to further
accommodate growth. Following the client’s
instruction, the two existing lanes are to be
widened with two additional lanes to provide
a complete dual carriageway. Furthermore,
the road cross section needs to be extended
to 2 x 8.00 m including a 4 m median and
2.75 m strengthened shoulders on both side.
For the further dualisation of the road,
extensive demolition works of existing
structures are necessary. All electrical
installations along the road are relocated or
newly erected.
After detailed studies of the traffic loads, the
strengthening of the road cross section was
recommended and adopted by the State
Government.
To realise this, a 15 cm thick base-course
layer is placed. On top of the base course,
a 6 cm standard binder course layer plus
an additional second asphaltic binder
course layer of 6 cm is layed. On these two
binder course layers, the standard asphaltic
wearing course layer of 4 cm will be topped.
The improved cross section ensures a high
durability of the road under the expected
high traffic loads providing a long term high
quality solution for Akwa Ibom.
A drainage system of trapezoidal drains and
U-channels for road and surface drainage
will be also fabricated and erected by JBN.
In the township areas, walkways are
installed on both sides of the road to provide
safe passage for pedestrians.
