• Stress is a state of mental pressure.
• It is the body’s adaptation response to any
demand or pressure. These demands or
pressures are called stressors.
• Stress can be defined as a state of physical
mental tension caused by certain external or
internal factors in a person's life. It is a normal
physiological response of the body stimulus
which is perceived as dangerous to the body.

• According to Allen, stress is the feeling we
experience when we lose confidence in our
ability to cope with a situation.
• Oxford Dictionary defines stress as a state of
affair involved demand on physical or mental
energy.

Types of Stress
• Eustress (Positive Stress) : a positive form of
stress having a beneficial effect on health,
motivation, performance, and emotional well-
being. Eg: Receiving a promotion or raise at
work, Starting a new job etc.
• Distress (Negative Stress) : It occurs when
your level of stress is either too high or too low
and your body or mind respond negatively to the
stressors. Eg: Losing contact with loved ones,
the death of a family member etc.

Stages of Stress
1. Alarm Stage : The alarm reaction stage refers
to the initial symptoms the body experiences
when under stress Eg: Cardiac, Respiratory etc
2. Resistance stage : After the initial shock of a
stressful event and having a fight-or-flight
response, the body begins to repair itself. Eg :
irritability, frustration

3. Exhaustion stage : This stage is the result of
prolonged or chronic stress. Struggling with
stress for long periods can drain your physical,
emotional, and mental resources to the point
where your body no longer has strength to fight
stress. Eg : Fatigue, burnout, depression etc

Adolescent are more susceptible to stress as they
are often ill-equipped to cope with the stressors
that they face in the family and school.

Stress Management
Stress management involves controlling and
reducing the tension that occurs in stressful
situations by making emotional and physical
changes. The following are some of the ways by
which teacher can assist the adolescents to
reduce, prevent and cope with stress.
1. Ways to support a stressed adolescent
• Be available to listen
• Take them seriously
• Do not offer platitudes such as , Don’t worry,
you’re over reacting, Cheer up etc

• Teach them coping strategies
such as problem solving
• Teach them how to manage emotions
• Teach them how to break apart stressors, issues
and tasks.
• Encourage them to find activities that are stress

activities normally enjoyed.
