3. ADOLESCENCE -
Adolescence is the period or stage of a child’s life
where he or she grows to maturity.

4. Behavioural Problems
 Teens seems to hate their parents
 Communication devices rule their lives

Drug and Substance Abuse
 Factors - peer pressure, poor self-esteem and the
tendency to take risk
 Underage drinking and smoking and use of
certain harmful drugs such as cocaine,
marijuana, heroin, etc.

5. Stress and Depression
 Stress - feeling of being overwhelmed, worried or
run-down
 Depression - refers to the experience of a
pervasive unhappy mood
 Stress, whether chronic, or acute, can lead to
major depression

 Social pressure by members of one’s peer group
 Causes teens to do things they wouldn’t do
 Pressure to use alcohol, cigarettes or drugs
 Drastic changes in behaviour and attitudes

 Engaging in sexual activities

9. School Problems
 Result of rebellion and a need for independence
 Includes fear of going to school, dropping out,
and academic underachievement
 Physical symptoms may also develop

 Extreme changes in weight (loss or gain)
 Sleep disturbances (insomnia)
 Early or late onset of puberty; in girls failure to

 Body consciousness can lead to anorexia or
bulimia

The adolescent period is a stormy one in which several
types of problems emerge in all cultural societies. As
adolescents are highly sensitive and self-conscious, they
easily get emotional and frustrated. So there must be some
changes in the rearing practices of the parents. They must
teach the sense of responsibility to their children.
Apart from the parents, the school teachers are partly
responsible for moulding and shaping the conduct and
character of the students. So, they should inculcate in
them good manners and the human values and make them
realize the importance of duties and responsibilities that
one has to perform for the welfare of the society.
