2. Women Empowerment refers to the creation of an environment
for women where they can make decisions of their own for their
personal benefits as well as for the society.
Need for women development programmes:
Patriarchal system of society. So to eliminate ill practices and
discrimination against women, we need to empower women.
Limited access to productive resources
Non-recognition of women’s role in decision making
Non involvement of women in institutional work
4. Integrated Child Development Service Scheme (ICDS):
Launched on 2nd October, 1975,by GOI, in the Ministry of Social and Women’s
Welfare
today ICDS scheme represents one of the world’s largest and most unique
programmes for mother and early childhood development
Objectives:
• To improve the nutritional and health status of children in the age-group of 0-6
years and pregnant and lactating mother
• To lay the foundation for the proper psychological, physical and social development
of the child
• To reduce the incidence of mortality, malnutrition, school drop-outs
• To enhance the capability of the mother to look after the health and nutritional
needs of the child through proper health and nutrition education
5. Services:
The objects are sought to be achieved through a package of
services comprising:
Supplementary nutrition: For children below 6 years, about 200
calories and 8-10 grams protein, for pregnant and lactating
woman 500 calories and 25 grams protein are given for 300
days a year
Immunisation
Health check-up
Non formal pre-school education
Nutrition and health education
6. Development of Women and Children in Rural
Areas(DWCRA):
Initiated as a sub-scheme of IRDP in 1982-83
To provide income generating activities for women and
also provide an organizational support in terms of a
receiving system for the assisted women so that they
could become effective recipients of goods and services
available in that area
The rationale behind the programme was that women’s
income is known to have positive correlation with the
nutritional and educational status of the family
7. Mahila Samridhi Yojana:
Started on 2nd October, 1993
With the objective of providing economic security to rural
women and to encourage the saving habit among them
Rural women of 18 years and above are assisted to open their
saving account in the post office in their area
Department of women and child development is the nodal
agency
8. Rashtriya Mahila Kosh:
Was set up in 1993
With the objective of assisting women below poverty line in
undertaking income generating activities through provision of
package of financial and other services, and encourage
promotion of woman SHGs
Provides credit for facilitating production and economic
activities along with supports for training for skill upgradation
9. Janani Suraksha Yojana:
From April 1, 2005
100% centrally sponsored scheme
Seeks to focus on providing benefits to the pregnant women of
‘Below Poverty Line’ families and to encourage anti-natal care,
institutional deliveries and post-partum care
Women aged 19 years and above, belonging to BPL families, are
eligible for benefit under the scheme for first two live-births
10. Working Women’s Hostel (WWH)
Aim: Scheme envisages provision of safe and affordable hostel for
women.
Objective:
The main objective of the scheme is to promote availability of
safe and conveniently located accommodation for working women
with day care facility for their children wherever possible in
urban, semi urban or even rural areas where employment
opportunity for women exist.
11. Support to Training and Employment
Programme (STEP) for Women
Revised in December, 2014
Aim: To make a significant impact on women by upgrading skills.
The target group includes the marginalised asset less rural women
and urban poor
Objectives
To mobilise women in small viable groups and make facilities
available through training and access to credits
To provide training for skill upgrading
To enable groups of women to take up employment-cum- income
generation programmes
12. SWADHAR Greh Scheme
Aim: To provide temporary accommodation, maintenance and
rehabilitative services to women and girls rendered homeless due
to family discord, crime, violence, mental stress, social ostracism.
Launched: 2001
Objectives:
To cater to the primary need of shelter, food, clothing, medical
treatment and care of the women in distress and who are without
any social and economic support.
To enable them to start their life as fresh with dignity and
conviction.
13. Mahila e-Haat
Launched in 7 March, 2016
Aim: To strengthen financial inclusion of Women Entrepreneurs
in the economy by providing continues sustenance and support
to their creativity.
Objectives:
Mahila e-Haat is an initiative for meeting needs of women
entrepreneurs.
To act as a catalyst by providing a web-based marketing
platform to the women entrepreneurs to directly sell their
products.
14. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme:
Aim: To generate awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare
services meant for girls
Launched on: 22 January 2015
Initial Funding: 100 crore
Objectives:
To prevent sex-selective abortion
To ensure survival and protection of a girl child
To ensure education of the girl child
15. One Stop Centre Scheme
Launched in 1st April,2015
Aim: To provide support and assistance to women affected by
violence both in private and public spaces.
Funds: The Scheme will be funded through Nirbhaya Fund.
Objectives:
To provide integrated support and assistance to women
affected by violence, both in private and public spaces under
one roof.
To facilitate immediate emergency and nonemergency access
to a range of services including medical, legal, psychological
and counselling support to fight against any forms of violence
against women.
16. Women helpline scheme
Aim: Scheme for Universalization of Women Helpline is meant to
provide 24 hours immediate and emergency response to women
affected by violence.
Launched on: 1 April 2015
Objectives:
To provide toll-free 24-hours telecom service to women
affected by violence seeking support and information.
To help crisis and non-crisis intervention through referral to the
appropriate agencies such as police/Hospitals/Ambulance
services/District Legal Service Authority (DLSA)/Protection
Officer (PO).
To provide information about the appropriate support services,
government schemes available to the woman affected by
17. Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana
a Maternity Benefit Programme
Objectives of the programme include providing partial
compensation for the wage loss in terms of cash incentives so
that the woman can take adequate rest before and after delivery
of the first living child.
Target beneficiaries of the programme include all Pregnant
Women and Lactating Mothers, excluding PW&LM who are in
regular employment
Benefits under PMMVY include cash incentive of Rs 5000 in
18. National Research Centre for Women in Agriculture
(NRCWA)
ICAR established the NRCWA in1996 at Bhubaneswar
It is carrying out basic, strategic and applied research on various
gender related issues in agriculture; technology testing and
refinement; drudgery reduction, gender sensitive extension
approach and gender mainstreaming
19. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana:
It aims at providing clean-cooking fuel to poor households, who
are otherwise vulnerable to various health hazards associated
with indoor air pollution
Government had set target to provide deposit free LPG
connections under PMUY to 5 crore BPL households by 31 March
2019
20. Programmes with special components for women:

Swarnajayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana, now reconstructed as

The implementation of these programmes is monitored specially
with reference to coverage of women
