While many cases of Diabetic Retinopathy have little to no symptoms or warning signs, there are a few things to look out for especially if you are at-risk. If you are experiencing floaters in your vision, blurred or fluctuating vision, or dark spots in your field of view it might be time to visit your eye care professional! If caught early vision loss can be slowed, because of this it is important to have regular eye exams and to proactively manage your diabetes.

2.  Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye
problems that people with diabetes may face
as a complication of diabetes. All can cause
severe vision loss or even blindness.

3.  Diabetic retinopathy – damage to the blood
vessels in the retina
 Cataract – clouding of the eye’s lens.Cataracts
develop at an earlier age in people in diabetes.
 Glaucoma – increase in fluid pressure inside
the eye that leads to optic nerve damage and
loss of vision.
 Lens – hypermetropia or myopia due to lens
swelling

4. Diabetic retinopathy has four stages :
 Mild Nonproliferative Retinopathy
 Modarate Nonproliferative Retinopathy
 Severe Nonproliferative Retinopathy
 Proliferative Retinopathy

5.  Most often diabetic retinopathy has no
symptoms until the damage your eyes is
severe.
Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy include:
o Blurred vision and gradual vision loss
o Shadow or missing areas in vision
o Difficulty seeing at night time.

6.  Age at diagnosis of diabetes
 Duration of diabetes
 Poor metabolic control
 Hypertension
 Pregnancy
 Others –
smoking,obesity,anemia,hyperlipidemia

11.  The health care provider can diagnose
diabetic retinopathy by dilating the pupils
with eye drops and then carefully examining
the retina.
 A retinal photography of fluorescein
angiography test may also be used.

12.  Tight control of blood sugar, blood pressure,
and cholesterol is very important for
preventing diabetic retinopathy
 Do not smoke. If you need help quitting, ask
doctor or counselor.
