This document summarizes several common eye problems: pterygium, corneal ulcer, glaucoma, cataract, and diabetic retinopathy. Pterygium is a growth of tissue over the cornea caused by UV light or dry eye. Corneal ulcers cause severe pain and vision loss. Glaucoma damages the optic nerve and risks include age over 40 and family history. Cataracts cause blurry vision and are treated surgically. Diabetic retinopathy, from uncontrolled blood sugar, risks blindness without laser treatment or injections to stabilize the retina.
2. Pterigium
A pterygium means growth of conjuctival tissue over cornea
Symptoms :
Burning
Gritty feeling
Itching
Sensation of a foreign body in the eye
Blurred vision
Causes of
Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light
Dry Eye
Irritants such as dust and wind
Treatment
Surgical Removal With graft
3. Corneal Ulcer
Common In our area because of Farm Industry
Symptoms
Severe Pain
Redness
Decresed Vision
White Spot over cornea
Treatment –Frequent Bunching of antibiotics
and anti fungul drops
Refer to Eye Specialist
4. Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a condition that causes damage to eye's
optic nerve and gets worse over time.
It's often associated with a high Intra ocular pressure
inside the eye.
Risk Of Glaucoma ?
Are over age 40
Have a family history of glaucoma
Have diabetes
Take certain steroid medications, such as prednisone
Have had trauma to the eye or eyes

Symptoms
Asymptomatic
Decresed Vision
Narrowing of vision (tunnel vision)
Pain in the eye
Redness in the eye
Seeing halos around lights
Headache ,Nausea,vomiting
TREATMENT –
ANTI GLAUCOMA DROPS
SURGERY
8. Cataract
Clouding(Opacity) of the lens
Develop slowly over the course of years.
Symptom
blurry vision and sometimes Improvement of
Near Vision
When a cataract interferes with someone's usual
activities, the cloudy lens can be replaced with a
clear, artificial lens.
This is generally a Very safe,Shorttime Outpatient
procedure.
10. Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of Diabetes, caused by high blood
sugar levels damaging retina
It can cause blindness if left undiagnosed and untreated.
Who is at Risk ?
Long Duration uncontrolled sugar level and associated systemic Disease
like Hypertension
Symptoms -
gradually worsening vision
sudden vision loss
shapes floating in your field of vision (floaters)
Treatment –
laser treatment – to treat the growth of new blood vessels at the back of
the eye (retina) in cases of proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and to
stabilise some cases of maculopathy
eye injections – to treat severe maculopathy that's threatening your sight
eye surgery–to remove blood or scar tissue from the eye if laser treatment
isn't possible becuse retinopathy is too advanced
11. D/D of Red Eyes
Conjunctivitis (bacterial, viral, allergic, irritative)
Subconjunctival hemorrhage
Pterygium
Stye, Blepharitis,
Corneal ulcer
Episcleritis
Iritis or iridocyclitis
Abrasions or foreign bodies
Acute angle closure glaucoma
