Foundation of Sushant School of Art & Architecture
1. 1989 - FOUNDATION OF SUSHANT SCHOOL OF ART & ARCHITECTURE
…this was a place where design based pursuits and idea-oriented thinking fostered a
‘learning-by-doing’ process, where ‘each one-teach-one’ in a pretence-free
environment began at the beginning.
- Brijender S Dua
2. Pioneers were encouraged to grow wings and take off towards the unexplored corners
of their thought processes. Each problem tackled with a spirit of looking for answers
within the problem itself.
Sushant had ‘… given us the responsibility to make our own creative contribution
towards a better society and environment and made us worthy individuals’.
1994- GRADUATION OF FIRST BATCH OF SSAA
3. Fellow of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Padma Shri MM Rana, our Founder Dean,
envisioned SSAA not as a factory to produce architects but as a workshop for moulding
aesthetic sensibilities.
FOUNDER DEAN - PROF SHRI MM RANA
13. SSAA has a significant place in my career
spanning over 50 years, both as an
academician and architect. When I joined it in
1990, the School was still in its formative
stage and Professor MM Rana was the
guiding force behind every new venture.
That year, as part of the School’s first festival,
a12 feet diameter hemisphere or Great-circle
was constructed with intersecting plywood
strips that divided the surface into 60 equal
right-angled triangles.
The project was completed by first year
students under the most challenging
circumstances, with a nominal budget of Rs.
2000 and a tight deadline of 48 hours, in spite
of the fact that at that point there was no
workshop facility on campus.
- Prof. M S Satsangi
27. In line with the belief of Professor Rana, the course of art in SSAA was aimed at developing the
inner faculties of the students, with skill development addressed as a subservient to the main
thrust. It involved many exercises in abstract thinking that also helped improve drawing skills and
techniques of expression along with inculcating an understanding of form space relationship.
- Prof. M R Renjen
ART AS INTEGRAL TO ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION
63. As an alumni, the most important part of
becoming an architect at SSAA was the
manner in which this institution moulded
and helped us in our personal and
intellectual growth . From learning how to
draw a straight line on paper to a dream of
designing an actual building , this institute
provided us the perfect infrastructure for the
dream run. More than the culture , the
teachers at this institute were a mixture of
young and experienced architects , giving us
a dual perspective learning at the same time.
SANCHIT ARORA
ALUMNI SPEAK
64. I believe design cannot be taught, but under
the guidance of eminent professors at SSAA,
one can always push boundaries and explore
new dimensions. Each day has been a new
learning experience for me; whether in
studios, field tours or during campus
activities, from seniors or from juniors. From
a naive designer to an architect, the years in
Sushant have moulded me into a responsible
citizen and I am working towards building a
better environment.
