2. defination of a model
• A model refers to a graphical
representation that is designed to explain
how an object, system or a concept work.
• Models are used to give a summerized
breakdown of a complex concept for easy
learning.
• When used during instruction, they help
improve interaction and used as quick
point of reference.
3. The four models of
communication
• Linear models also called Actional models
• Interactive models
• Transactional models
• Ecological model
4. Linear or actional models
• These are one way communications that do not
require feedback. Example in a radio and
television communication.
• The receiver only receives the message without
replying.
• Examples : >Aristotle model.
>Lasswell model.(1948)
>The transmission model by
Shannon & Weaver(1949)
>The Berlow's model.
5. The Interactive model or
Convergence models
These models involves the exchange of
concepts and messages taking place in to
parties, from the sender to the receiver and
from the receiver to the sender.
The models allow the interaction between
the sender and the receiver as there is
feedback expectation.
Examples of interactive model is
> Schramm model.(1954) ,(1997)
> Osgood's model(1959)
6. The Transactional model
• These are models that involve exchange
of information between communicators in
an ongoing, continously changing process
in a disorganized way.
• The communicators react to each other as
per social, cultural and relation orientation.
• Examples of transctional models
>Barnlund's model
>Helical model
>Becker's mosaic model
7. The Ecological models
• This models involves the creator(sender)
and the consumer (receiver)
communicating with each other in their
social network , both face to face and
using a variety of media and
communication technologies (language
and devices).
8. • Examples of ecological modelis the new
Foulger's model (2004) ,which is an
advancement of Lasswell's model of 1948.
