Dynamics of Destructive Polarisation in Mainstream and Social Media: The Case...
Evauluation q1
1. Main Story
Other conventions are similar to those well established local
newspaper for example I have added a main story to give the
audience a taste of what is inside the newspaper. I have also
implemented the use creating a bold headline to clearly address to
the reader what has happened and to support it I have also added a
image in relation to the main headline story.
Following more conventions the text below are smaller to give it that more
professional newspaper look and also the language consisting of it
such as ‘wife sentenced to life after murder of husband’ is short and
cuts to the chase which is similar to other newspapers.
Also, the extremely little text under the image is also found in local
newspaper as it gives a clear description of what the image is and
how it relates to the story it is attached with.
These types of convention makes it very informative for the audience and
continuously gives the readers an up to date notice of what is
occurring, the short, snappy headline creates a sense of excitement
for the audience.
Furthermore, by adding an image of a human gives it that more human
touch as its not mechanic and unrealistic and this gives and
opportunity for the newspaper and the audience to focus on the
people of Wembley
In this case I have followed the conventions of a local newspaper to give it
that sense of excitement and professional look to the newspaper.
2. Masthead
Masthead positioned on the top of the newspaper to attract the audiences
attention
and because it’s called ‘the Wembley scoop’ the wembley brings
proximity which is a
key part of a newspaper according to the theory of galtung & ruge
news value. Like
other masthead it is clear and bold to address the audience in a
conservative manner
and to show a sense of seriousness and a document that possesses
factual information. Also with it’s bold black fonts it provides a feeling
of masculinity which supports the usual conventions of a local
newspaper and with a word that is in another colour in this case it is
‘Wembley’. This helps the audience to clearly establish the target
market of this newspaper being the people in Wembley.
We could see by looking at professional well established local
newspapers such as Islington gazette and Harrow Observer that the area
of which the newspaper is relating to is often in smaller fronts this can
show the little significance as we are first made aware that this is a
newspaper. Clear and Bold and also short and snappy. We are also
aware that the area name is also placed above the rest of the name which
gives a sense of creativity and excitement.
In this case I have not challenged the usual conventions of a typical local
newspaper’s masthead as I want my local newspaper to have that
professional look that is shown on the masthead of the other two
examples given.
3. Cover Story
By proving vital news regarding the main story for the
audience they have also the chance to briefly read
other news that is within the newspaper. In my
newspaper I have added ‘The Wembley Army Are
Back’ and ‘Graffiti, art of vandalism?’ This follows the
usual conventions of real media products because
the headline is place under the image to provide a
clear understanding of the less significant stories.
Also by using conventions or real media products I have
also added the page numbers similarly in real media
products to give the readers an easier clearer
understanding of where to go for which story; this
helps the readers making it more easier and more
efficient for the readers.
Also by adding clear photos of people, humanises the
newspaper showing the newspaper that it focuses
about people. However I have challenged real media
conventions with this example as I have added a
picture of graffiti because one of my cover stories is
regarding graffiti.
4. Layout
• As well as using conventions of real media I have also developed
some forms. For example, using some conventions such as
masthead being at the top of the newspaper, the main headline story
being in the centre of the newspaper, and consisting of various
advertises through out the newspaper. My newspaper ‘The Wembley
Scoop’ by following real media conventions gives a professional look
as well as makes the newspaper extremely clear for the readers to
update themselves with important news occurring throughout the
week.
• I have also developed some real media conventions for example by
adding some cover stories in contrast to the ‘Islington Gazette’ by
adding other cover stories it also gives readers a chance to know
what other stories are happening throughout the local area. In
addition builds up excitement by addressing what other stories are
currently occurring and it gives the audience a variety within the front
cover.
• By following real media conventions it gives a chance for my
newspaper to be more professional and more readable for the target
market and it builds up a sense of attraction. As well as developing
and challenging some real life media conventions it provides a
unique selling point for my newspaper and it adds variety to the
newspaper.
5. Media Language
• Firstly by following real life media
conventions I have created media language
that fits in with those that are found in local
newspapers such as the addition of dates
and various types of stories. Also by adding
short snappy headlines such as ‘wife
sentenced for murder of husband’ with the
use of words such as ‘murder’ makes the
newspaper look extremely exciting and gives
the readers a sense of fascination.
• By adding exciting media language makes
the newspaper more attractive and appealing
to the eyes.
