Unit operations used for the separation and processing
of separated and commingled wastes are designed to
Size reduction is the transfer of objects, in this case waste, into smaller
particles. Every process of size reduction helps to increase the specific
surface of the particle, but there is some information necessary to choose
the right aggregate for the size reduction:
• Physical characteristics of material to be reduced (e.g. particle size,
structure, hardness, brittleness and fissionability)
• Future usage of the material (e.g. is there a following physical or chemical
processing of the material)
• Required properties of final material (e.g. particle size, particle size
distribution and average particle size)

Shredders are useful machines for the volume reduction of bulky

 Magnetic & Electrostatic field separation uses electrical &
magnetic properties of waste materials. Such as Electrostatic
Charge & Magnetic permeability to separate materials.
 Magnetic separation technology used for the separating ferrous
from non-ferrous materials.
 Electrostatic separation can be used to separate plastic, paper
based on the differing surface charge characteristics of two
materials.
Equipment & their functions
Either permanent magnet or Electromagnet can be used.
It carries three stages:- 1) Pick-up Magnet
2) Transfer Magnet
3) Discharge Magnet.

High voltage electronic fields is used to separate non conductors
of electricity like Glass, Papers, Woods, etc…
It is also useful for separate non-conductors to each other by
differences in their electrical charges.

• Makes waste easier to handle
• Optimizes transport logistics
• Reduces landfill costs
• Creates a RDF that can be used in some gasifiers and biomass boilers
• Desification machines are relatively simple and easy to operate
• Increases the density of waste materials so that can be stored and
transported more efficiently
• Several technologies are available for the densification of solid
wastes and recovered materials including baling, cubing and
pelleting, briquetting.
• It is a technology to change idle rubbish into useful and valuable energy

physical characteristics need to be separated
quickly and efficiently.
