Unit operation for Separation and Processing of Solid Waste Materials
1.
2.
3. ▪ Modify the physical characteristics of the wastes so
that the waste components can be removed easily
▪ Remove specific components and contaminants from
the waste stream
▪ process and prepare the separated materials for
subsequent uses
Unit operations used for the separation and processing
of separated and commingled wastes are designed to
4. Size reduction is the transfer of objects, in this case waste, into smaller
particles. Every process of size reduction helps to increase the specific
surface of the particle, but there is some information necessary to choose
the right aggregate for the size reduction:
• Physical characteristics of material to be reduced (e.g. particle size,
structure, hardness, brittleness and fissionability)
• Future usage of the material (e.g. is there a following physical or chemical
processing of the material)
• Required properties of final material (e.g. particle size, particle size
distribution and average particle size)

7. Shredding
Application of shredders
• Essential for eco-centers, landfills, wrecking and waste management and recycling
organizations
• Great efficiency and performance, sturdiness
• Indicated in the treatment of any type of solid waste
• Able to satisfy the different production requirements
Shredders are useful machines for the volume reduction of bulky
waste such as reams of paper, paper materials, bumpers, tires,
refrigerators and the shredding of different materials such as scrap
iron, aluminum, copper, plastic as well as municipal solid waste and
industrial waste.
9. Screening
Principal applications of screening
• Removal of oversized materials
• Removal of undersized materials
• Separation of waste into light combustible and heavy
combustible
• Recovery of paper, plastic and other light materials from
glass and metal
• Separation of glass, girt and sand from combustible
materials
• Separation of rocks and oversized debris from soil
excavated at construction sites
• Removal of oversized materials from combustion ash
Screening is used to separate mixtures of materials of
different sizes
13. Magnetic & Electrostatic separation
Magnetic & Electrostatic field separation uses electrical &
magnetic properties of waste materials. Such as Electrostatic
Charge & Magnetic permeability to separate materials.
Magnetic separation technology used for the separating ferrous
from non-ferrous materials.
Electrostatic separation can be used to separate plastic, paper
based on the differing surface charge characteristics of two
materials.
14. Equipment & their functions
Either permanent magnet or Electromagnet can be used.
It carries three stages:- 1) Pick-up Magnet
2) Transfer Magnet
3) Discharge Magnet.
Magnetic Separation
15. Electrostatic separation
High voltage electronic fields is used to separate non conductors
of electricity like Glass, Papers, Woods, etc…
It is also useful for separate non-conductors to each other by
differences in their electrical charges.
16. Densification
Benefits
• Makes waste easier to handle
• Optimizes transport logistics
• Reduces landfill costs
• Creates a RDF that can be used in some gasifiers and biomass boilers
• Desification machines are relatively simple and easy to operate
• Increases the density of waste materials so that can be stored and
transported more efficiently
• Several technologies are available for the densification of solid
wastes and recovered materials including baling, cubing and
pelleting, briquetting.
• It is a technology to change idle rubbish into useful and valuable energy
18. • balersreduces the volume of waste for storage , prepare
thewaste for marketing and increase the density of the
wastethereby reducing the shipping costs
• the materials most commonly baled include paper,
cardboardplastics, aluminum and tin cans and large metal
component

19. • Can Crushers are used to crush aluminum and tin cans, thus
increasing their density and reducing handling and shipping
costs
• Typically, aluminum cans are crushed and blown into
largetransport trailers for shipping

20. Density Separation
• Used to separate light materials from heavier material, based on
the weight difference of the material in an air stream.
• Uses spiral air flow action or acceleration within a chamber to separate
or classify solid particles.
21. Air Clasifiers
• An industral machine which separate materials by a
combination of size, shape and density.
• commonly employed in industrial process where
large volume of mixed materials with dffering
physical characteristics need to be separated
quickly and efficiently.
• helpful for cement, air pollution control, food
processing, pigments, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics
or chemical industries.
