2. In our production, the female character is
aspirational as she lives in a nice house and
seems financially comfortable. This connotes
that she is of higher income bracket
She also appears to have a professional job as
shown by the clothes she changes into
There is also a sense of ‘deserve’ because she
is middle class that she can have the celebrity in
the end. This reiterates the aspirational nature
to our opening sequence
CLASS
3. RACE
Our actress is white
Stereotypically the protagonists in romantic
comedies from Hollywood have always been
white
This makes her relatable to the white members
of society, but that doesn’t mean the black
members don’t relate to the protagonist. It
means that they relate to her in a different way
whether it be through her profession, her age or
her class
4. AGE
Our actress is young and fits into our age bracket of our target
audience
For younger viewers, she is an aspirational figure as she shows
that she is hard working and determined to get what she wants no
matter what
For the middle of the age group, the same age as the actress,
provides personal identity as they are able to relate to her through
the point of her life that she is at as it is the same
The older end of the age group can too relate to the actress as
they too are thinking of marriage and/or are getting married
The age of our actress fits well with our target audience because
she is relatable to everyone
5. GENDER
Women are represented in a similar way in
romantic comedies
Gauntlett’s theory of women are presented in
the male gaze applies in this genre and in our
production because in the end she will be saved
by the male who ‘fancies her’ because of her
attractivness
Levi-strauss’ binary oppositions are consistent
show that men are strong vs women are weak
so women look up to them hoping that they will
save the day
6. SEXUALITY
The stereotypical romance in romantic
comedies is between a heterosexual couple as
that is what the narrative revolves around
The typical audience member of romantic
comedy is heterosexual which consequently
provides them with personal identity with the
protagonist
Homosexuality in romantic comedies is arising
as the ‘gay best friend’ role is emerging. But
unfortunately this role is not in our film so
homosexuality is not represented in our
production only heterosexuality
7. SUCCESSES
In our production we managed to remain
quite conventional
We have
A white heterosexual couple in a relationship
An aspirational yet relatable protagonist
The female character appeals to both men and
women as she appears in the male gaze yet is
intelligent through her line of work
