Objectives
• Identify the characteristics of matter in
terms of their properties.
• Conclude that matter occupies space and
has weight.
Fast sharing
matter
Discussion on their responses in the fast sharing activity.
Choose one object and describe all the
properties that they can observe about
the object.
Collaborative activity:
Activity 5.1 : Properties of Matter
I.Problem : What are the properties of matter?
II. What You need:
platform balance block of wood drinking glass
Pencil stone marker
Book water a pail with water
Deflated balloon paper clips
Collaborative activity:
Activity 5.1 : Properties of Matter
III. What to do:
Part A.
1. Prepare the platform balance.
2. Get the mass of the book, block of wood,
pencil, and stone separately. Get also the
mass of water in the glass and the mass of
air inside the inflated balloon ( with the
teachers guidance ).
3. Record their mass.
Collaborative activity:
Activity 5.1 : Properties of Matter
III. What to do:
Part B.
1. Half-fill a glass with water. Use the marker
to mark the level of water.
2. Drop the stone in the glass.
Part C.
1. Invert an empty glass and dip it into the pail
of water. Do not tilt the glass.
2. Take the glass of the water while keeping it
upside down.
Collaborative activity:

IV. What have you formed out?
1. What is the mass of the:
a. book - d. stone –
b. pencil - e. water in glass-c.
block of wood - f. air inside the balloon-
2. What happened to the level of the water
when you dropped the stones.

Discussion on the result of
the activity
The book , wood,
pencil, stone , air
and water have mass.
The rising of the
level of water in the
glass shows that
matter occupies
space. When glass is
inverted and dipped
into the pail of
water , water did not
enter the glass
because the trapped
air inside the glass
The activity shows two important properties of
matter.
1. Matter has mass
2. Matter occupies space. It has a volume.
Self-exploration:
Mass – is the pull of gravity on
matter.
Ex. Dropping an object, it will fall
to the floor because of the earth’s
gravity that pull all objects
toward it.
Weighing an object is measuring the
pull of gravity. Gravity controls the
weight of an object.
Getting closer to the center of the earth, the
pull of gravity gets stronger, weigh is more.
Moving away from the center of the earth, the
pull of gravity gets weaker , weigh is less.
Weigh is slightly less on top of a high mountain
than in plain.
Gravity is a force that pulls all objects
toward the center of the earth.
• Weight is sometimes interchanged with the
word mass because they are related. The mass
of an object is reflected by its weight. The more
mass an object has, the greater its weight is.
• Mass refers to the amount of matter an object
contains. It is not affected by gravity.
The pull of gravity on Earth , Moon, and Jupiter are
different from each other because they are not the
same size. Therefore , te weight of an object will be
different in Earth, Moon, and Jupiter, but the mass of
the same object will not change.
Study the chart
Variables Earth Moon Jupiter Remarks
Mass 6 kg 6 kg 6 kg Same
Weight 6 kg 1 kg 15 kg Change
Gravity 1 1/6 2.5 different
Self-exploration:
b. Write what you learn from the reading in a three
column chart.
Mass Weight Volume
Discussion on their answers to the
following questions:
a. How does matter become beneficial to our
daily life?
b. Why is it important to understand the
properties of matter?
Discussion on their answers to the
following questions:
6. Let the children read the paragraph about
“Density”(Science and environment) on page
219 of the
• Let the pupils compose a song (or video: song
of matter)
Generalization
Matter is anything that occupies space and has
weight.
Valuing
appreciation on how matter are beneficial to
our life
Evaluation
A. What is the difference between weight and
mass?
B. How do you measure the volume of regular
solids?
C. How do you measure the volume of irregular
solids?

Properties of matter

  • 1. Properties of Prepared by : Mrs. Shirley P. Valera SY 201-2015 St. Augustine / St. Francis
  • 2. Objectives • Identify the characteristics of matter in terms of their properties. • Conclude that matter occupies space and has weight.
  • 3. Fast sharing matter Discussion on their responses in the fast sharing activity.
  • 4. Choose one object and describe all the properties that they can observe about the object.
  • 5. Collaborative activity: Activity 5.1 : Properties of Matter I.Problem : What are the properties of matter? II. What You need: platform balance block of wood drinking glass Pencil stone marker Book water a pail with water Deflated balloon paper clips
  • 6. Collaborative activity: Activity 5.1 : Properties of Matter III. What to do: Part A. 1. Prepare the platform balance. 2. Get the mass of the book, block of wood, pencil, and stone separately. Get also the mass of water in the glass and the mass of air inside the inflated balloon ( with the teachers guidance ). 3. Record their mass.
  • 7. Collaborative activity: Activity 5.1 : Properties of Matter III. What to do: Part B. 1. Half-fill a glass with water. Use the marker to mark the level of water. 2. Drop the stone in the glass. Part C. 1. Invert an empty glass and dip it into the pail of water. Do not tilt the glass. 2. Take the glass of the water while keeping it upside down.
  • 8. Collaborative activity: Activity 5.1 : Properties of Matter IV. What have you formed out? 1. What is the mass of the: a. book - d. stone – b. pencil - e. water in glass-c. block of wood - f. air inside the balloon- 2. What happened to the level of the water when you dropped the stones. ___________________________________________ 3. What happened inside the glass? ___________________________________________
  • 9. Collaborative activity: Activity 5.1 : Properties of Matter V. Conclusion: What two properties of matter are shown in this activity? __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________
  • 10. Discussion on the result of the activity
  • 11. The book , wood, pencil, stone , air and water have mass. The rising of the level of water in the glass shows that matter occupies space. When glass is inverted and dipped into the pail of water , water did not enter the glass because the trapped air inside the glass
  • 12. The activity shows two important properties of matter. 1. Matter has mass 2. Matter occupies space. It has a volume.
  • 13. Self-exploration: Mass – is the pull of gravity on matter. Ex. Dropping an object, it will fall to the floor because of the earth’s gravity that pull all objects toward it.
  • 14. Weighing an object is measuring the pull of gravity. Gravity controls the weight of an object.
  • 15. Getting closer to the center of the earth, the pull of gravity gets stronger, weigh is more. Moving away from the center of the earth, the pull of gravity gets weaker , weigh is less. Weigh is slightly less on top of a high mountain than in plain.
  • 16. Gravity is a force that pulls all objects toward the center of the earth.
  • 17. • Weight is sometimes interchanged with the word mass because they are related. The mass of an object is reflected by its weight. The more mass an object has, the greater its weight is. • Mass refers to the amount of matter an object contains. It is not affected by gravity.
  • 18. The pull of gravity on Earth , Moon, and Jupiter are different from each other because they are not the same size. Therefore , te weight of an object will be different in Earth, Moon, and Jupiter, but the mass of the same object will not change. Study the chart Variables Earth Moon Jupiter Remarks Mass 6 kg 6 kg 6 kg Same Weight 6 kg 1 kg 15 kg Change Gravity 1 1/6 2.5 different
  • 19. Self-exploration: b. Write what you learn from the reading in a three column chart. Mass Weight Volume
  • 20. Discussion on their answers to the following questions: a. How does matter become beneficial to our daily life? b. Why is it important to understand the properties of matter?
  • 21. Discussion on their answers to the following questions: 6. Let the children read the paragraph about “Density”(Science and environment) on page 219 of the
  • 22. • Let the pupils compose a song (or video: song of matter)
  • 23. Generalization Matter is anything that occupies space and has weight.
  • 24. Valuing appreciation on how matter are beneficial to our life
  • 25. Evaluation A. What is the difference between weight and mass? B. How do you measure the volume of regular solids? C. How do you measure the volume of irregular solids?
