DIFFERENT TYPE OF SERVICE IN BUILDING
Prof. Sharanabasappa C M.Arc (PhD)
M.Arch – Construction Project Management
SECAB’S MSIAA Collage Vijayapur
Types of Services in Buildings
 Building Services are the electrical, plumbing, and
mechanical systems in a building.
 For this reason they are also called MEP services, for
mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.
 Mechanical Services
Fire fighting Systems
 Elevators & Escalators
 HVAC Systems (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems)
 Gas Supply Systems (such as for heating and cooking in residential
buildings, or oxygen and nitrogen in hospitals)
 Compressed Air Systems used in industries
Types of Services in Buildings
 Electrical Services
 Power Supply
 Backup Power (such as diesel generators)
 Emergency Power (such as battery-based uninterrupted power
supply)
 Plumbing Systems
 Water Supply
 Drainage of Wastes
 Water Recycling Systems (these allow you to recover the water
from your waste and re-use that water for low-grade applications
such as flushing)
 Rainwater Harvesting
 Storm Water Drainage
Types of Services in Buildings
 Data based Systems or Low-Voltage
Systems Security Systems
 Security Systems
 Fire Alarm Systems
 Building Management Systems
 Public Address Systems
 Cable TV Systems
 Data Networks
 Voice Networks
Mechanical Services
 Fire Fighting System
 A fire fighting system is an activity of prevention during a fire
spread in building, home or warehouse with the use of proper fire
safety equipment like extinguisher, hose reels, fire monitors, nozzles
and hose pipes.
 Active and passive fire protection are two types of these
systems
 All fires can be extinguished by 3methds are cooling, smothering,
starving or by interrupting the combustion process to extinguish
the fire.
 The Fire Fighting System Consist of Three Basic Parts:
 1. A large storage of water in tanks, either underground or on top of
the building, called a fire storage tank.
 2. A fire water Pump House
 3. A Large Network of pipes ending in either hydrants or sprinklers
(covering all areas in the plant)
Mechanical Services
 Elevators & Escalators
 An elevator is a room type of lift that can accommodate some
people simultaneously. It is used to move passengers up and down
across various levels of a building. On the other hand, escalators are
moving stairs, which carry people between different levels of a
building.
Mechanical Services
 Elevators & Escalators
 Escalators are necessary “moving stairs” that carrying
public up or down between levels of a building.
 escalator are used in malls, metro and railway station, etc.
Mechanical Services
 HVAC Systems (heating, ventilation,
and air-conditioning systems)
 Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) is the use of
various technologies to control the temperature, humidity, and
purity of the air in an enclosed space. Its goal is to provide thermal
comfort and acceptable indoor air quality.
Mechanical Services
 Gas Supply Systems (such as for heating
and cooking in residential buildings, or
oxygen and nitrogen in hospitals)
 Medical gases are vital life support measure and have no substitute.
 It is an Engineering Sub-system.
 Oxygen therapy - 1867
 Gases used for Human Healthcare are
known as Medical Gases
 These are strictly controlled by both
legislation and standards
 These are listed as drugs in Indian, European, US, Japanese
Pharmacopoeias or in National Formulary of the countries
 These are considered drugs and have statutory specifications
Mechanical Services
 Gas Supply Systems (such as for heating
and cooking in residential buildings, or
oxygen and nitrogen in hospitals)
 City Gas Civil Pressure Regulator
 Integrate pressure regulation and
safety cut-off
 Optional gas alarm system, RTU unit
and communication unit
 Use box skid-mounted.
 Civilian medium and low voltage
regulators, mainly used in residential
quarters and restaurants and hotels
Mechanical Services
 Compressed Air Systems used in industries
 Compressed air is an important medium for transfer of energy in
industrial processes, and is used for power tools such as air
hammers, drills, wrenches, and others, as well as to atomize paint,
to operate air cylinders for automation, and can also be used to
propel vehicles.
Electrical Services
 Power Supply
 The power supply system is broadly divided into 3 sectors: (1) the
power generation sector, (2) the power transmission and
distribution sector, and (3) the retail sector. This sector operates
hydroelectric, thermal, nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal, and other
power plants and produces electricity.
Electrical Services
 Backup Power (such as diesel generators)
 Backup generators, aka portable generators, are not permanent
installations, rather, they are intended to provide temporary backup
power on an as-needed basis. They do not offer automatic outage
detection, as do their standby counterparts
Electrical Services
 Emergency Power (such as battery-based
uninterrupted power supply)
 Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are power supplies that can
switch over to a battery backup when power outages occur. Multiple
devices can be plugged into a UPS similar to a power bar, and the
UPS generally provides such functions as surge protection and noise
filtering.
Plumbing Systems
 Water Supply
 water supply system, infrastructure for the collection, transmission,
treatment, storage, and distribution of water for homes, commercial
establishments, industry, and irrigation, as well as for such public
needs as fire-fighting and street flushing. Of all municipal services,
provision of potable water is perhaps the most vital. People depend
on water for drinking, cooking, washing, carrying away wastes, and
other domestic needs
Plumbing Systems
 Drainage of Wastes
 Drainage systems capture water, reclaim it, and convey it to an
appropriate offsite location to be processed and treated for waste.
When water is captured, it must be adequately processed for both
hazardous and non-hazardous waste before it can be outlet into a
body of water or reused
Plumbing Systems
 Water Recycling Systems (these allow you to
recover the water from your waste and re-
use that water for low-grade applications
such as flushing)
 Water recycling is reusing treated wastewater for beneficial purposes
such as agricultural and landscape irrigation, industrial processes, toilet
flushing, and replenishing a ground water basin (referred to as ground
water recharge). Water recycling offers resource and financial savings
Plumbing Systems
 Rainwater Harvesting
 Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is the collection and storage of rain,
rather than allowing it to run off. Rainwater is collected from a roof-
like surface and redirected to a tank, cistern, deep pit (well, shaft,
or borehole), aquifer, or a reservoir with percolation, so that it
seeps down and restores the ground water.
Plumbing Systems
 Storm Water Drainage
 Storm water drainage system means the system of publicly or
privately operated rivers, creeks, ditches, drainage channels, pipes,
basins, street gutters, and lakes within the City through which or
into which storm water runoff, surface water or subsurface water is
conveyed or deposited.
Data based Systems
 Security Systems
 Protect Your Perimeter With Fence, Buried Cable & Microwave
Sensors. Smart Solutions...
Data based Systems
 Fire Alarm Systems
 A fire alarm system warns people when smoke, fire, carbon
monoxide or other fire-related or general notification emergency/
emergencies are detected
Data based Systems
 Building Management Systems
 Building management system (BMS) also known as building
automation system (BAS) refers to a computer-based control system
that needs to be installed within buildings to monitor and regulate
the building's electrical and mechanical equipment such as power
system, lighting, and ventilation
Data based Systems
 Public Address Systems
 A public address system (or PA system) is an electronic system
comprising microphones, amplifiers, loudspeakers, and related
equipment. It increases the apparent volume (loudness) of a human
voice, musical instrument, or other acoustic sound source or
recorded sound or music. PA systems are used in any public venue
that requires that an announcer, performer, etc.
Data based Systems
 Cable TV Systems
 Cable TV is the system where in TV signal is delivered to the users
using coaxial cable rather than radio waves. A cable TV company
collects all the TV signals and multiplexes them. Later multiplexed
signal is delivered to the subscribers.
Data based Systems
 Data Networks
 Data networks refer to systems designed to transfer data between
two or more access points via the use of system controls,
transmission lines and data switching. What makes a data network
unique from other types of networks is that it is set up to transmit
data only.
Data based Systems
 Voice Networks
 Voice Network means the infrastructure and other Network
resources used to transport voice traffic associated with voice
applications, including telephony, wireless, landline, voice over IP
and voicemail.

Types of Services in Buildings  Building Services are the electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems in a building.  For this reason they are also called MEP services, for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.  Mechanical Services Fire fighting Systems  Elevators & Escalators  HVAC Systems (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems)  Gas Supply Systems (such as for heating and cooking in residential buildings, or oxygen and nitrogen in hospitals)  Compressed Air Systems used in industries
  • 3. Types of Services in Buildings  Electrical Services  Power Supply  Backup Power (such as diesel generators)  Emergency Power (such as battery-based uninterrupted power supply)  Plumbing Systems  Water Supply  Drainage of Wastes  Water Recycling Systems (these allow you to recover the water from your waste and re-use that water for low-grade applications such as flushing)  Rainwater Harvesting  Storm Water Drainage
  • 4. Types of Services in Buildings  Data based Systems or Low-Voltage Systems Security Systems  Security Systems  Fire Alarm Systems  Building Management Systems  Public Address Systems  Cable TV Systems  Data Networks  Voice Networks
  • 5. Mechanical Services  Fire Fighting System  A fire fighting system is an activity of prevention during a fire spread in building, home or warehouse with the use of proper fire safety equipment like extinguisher, hose reels, fire monitors, nozzles and hose pipes.  Active and passive fire protection are two types of these systems  All fires can be extinguished by 3methds are cooling, smothering, starving or by interrupting the combustion process to extinguish the fire.  The Fire Fighting System Consist of Three Basic Parts:  1. A large storage of water in tanks, either underground or on top of the building, called a fire storage tank.  2. A fire water Pump House  3. A Large Network of pipes ending in either hydrants or sprinklers (covering all areas in the plant)
  • 6. Mechanical Services  Elevators & Escalators  An elevator is a room type of lift that can accommodate some people simultaneously. It is used to move passengers up and down across various levels of a building. On the other hand, escalators are moving stairs, which carry people between different levels of a building.
  • 7. Mechanical Services  Elevators & Escalators  Escalators are necessary “moving stairs” that carrying public up or down between levels of a building.  escalator are used in malls, metro and railway station, etc.
  • 8. Mechanical Services  HVAC Systems (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems)  Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) is the use of various technologies to control the temperature, humidity, and purity of the air in an enclosed space. Its goal is to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality.
  • 9. Mechanical Services  Gas Supply Systems (such as for heating and cooking in residential buildings, or oxygen and nitrogen in hospitals)  Medical gases are vital life support measure and have no substitute.  It is an Engineering Sub-system.  Oxygen therapy - 1867  Gases used for Human Healthcare are known as Medical Gases  These are strictly controlled by both legislation and standards  These are listed as drugs in Indian, European, US, Japanese Pharmacopoeias or in National Formulary of the countries  These are considered drugs and have statutory specifications
  • 10. Mechanical Services  Gas Supply Systems (such as for heating and cooking in residential buildings, or oxygen and nitrogen in hospitals)  City Gas Civil Pressure Regulator  Integrate pressure regulation and safety cut-off  Optional gas alarm system, RTU unit and communication unit  Use box skid-mounted.  Civilian medium and low voltage regulators, mainly used in residential quarters and restaurants and hotels
  • 11. Mechanical Services  Compressed Air Systems used in industries  Compressed air is an important medium for transfer of energy in industrial processes, and is used for power tools such as air hammers, drills, wrenches, and others, as well as to atomize paint, to operate air cylinders for automation, and can also be used to propel vehicles.
  • 12. Electrical Services  Power Supply  The power supply system is broadly divided into 3 sectors: (1) the power generation sector, (2) the power transmission and distribution sector, and (3) the retail sector. This sector operates hydroelectric, thermal, nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal, and other power plants and produces electricity.
  • 13. Electrical Services  Backup Power (such as diesel generators)  Backup generators, aka portable generators, are not permanent installations, rather, they are intended to provide temporary backup power on an as-needed basis. They do not offer automatic outage detection, as do their standby counterparts
  • 14. Electrical Services  Emergency Power (such as battery-based uninterrupted power supply)  Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are power supplies that can switch over to a battery backup when power outages occur. Multiple devices can be plugged into a UPS similar to a power bar, and the UPS generally provides such functions as surge protection and noise filtering.
  • 15. Plumbing Systems  Water Supply  water supply system, infrastructure for the collection, transmission, treatment, storage, and distribution of water for homes, commercial establishments, industry, and irrigation, as well as for such public needs as fire-fighting and street flushing. Of all municipal services, provision of potable water is perhaps the most vital. People depend on water for drinking, cooking, washing, carrying away wastes, and other domestic needs
  • 16. Plumbing Systems  Drainage of Wastes  Drainage systems capture water, reclaim it, and convey it to an appropriate offsite location to be processed and treated for waste. When water is captured, it must be adequately processed for both hazardous and non-hazardous waste before it can be outlet into a body of water or reused
  • 17. Plumbing Systems  Water Recycling Systems (these allow you to recover the water from your waste and re- use that water for low-grade applications such as flushing)  Water recycling is reusing treated wastewater for beneficial purposes such as agricultural and landscape irrigation, industrial processes, toilet flushing, and replenishing a ground water basin (referred to as ground water recharge). Water recycling offers resource and financial savings
  • 18. Plumbing Systems  Rainwater Harvesting  Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is the collection and storage of rain, rather than allowing it to run off. Rainwater is collected from a roof- like surface and redirected to a tank, cistern, deep pit (well, shaft, or borehole), aquifer, or a reservoir with percolation, so that it seeps down and restores the ground water.
  • 19. Plumbing Systems  Storm Water Drainage  Storm water drainage system means the system of publicly or privately operated rivers, creeks, ditches, drainage channels, pipes, basins, street gutters, and lakes within the City through which or into which storm water runoff, surface water or subsurface water is conveyed or deposited.

  • 21. Data based Systems  Fire Alarm Systems  A fire alarm system warns people when smoke, fire, carbon monoxide or other fire-related or general notification emergency/ emergencies are detected
  • 22. Data based Systems  Building Management Systems  Building management system (BMS) also known as building automation system (BAS) refers to a computer-based control system that needs to be installed within buildings to monitor and regulate the building's electrical and mechanical equipment such as power system, lighting, and ventilation
  • 23. Data based Systems  Public Address Systems  A public address system (or PA system) is an electronic system comprising microphones, amplifiers, loudspeakers, and related equipment. It increases the apparent volume (loudness) of a human voice, musical instrument, or other acoustic sound source or recorded sound or music. PA systems are used in any public venue that requires that an announcer, performer, etc.
  • 24. Data based Systems  Cable TV Systems  Cable TV is the system where in TV signal is delivered to the users using coaxial cable rather than radio waves. A cable TV company collects all the TV signals and multiplexes them. Later multiplexed signal is delivered to the subscribers.
  • 25. Data based Systems  Data Networks  Data networks refer to systems designed to transfer data between two or more access points via the use of system controls, transmission lines and data switching. What makes a data network unique from other types of networks is that it is set up to transmit data only.
  • 26. Data based Systems  Voice Networks  Voice Network means the infrastructure and other Network resources used to transport voice traffic associated with voice applications, including telephony, wireless, landline, voice over IP and voicemail.
