2. Biography
Freddie Robins is a contemporary textile artist. She studied
Constructed Textiles at Middlesex University and the Royal
College of Art in London, where she specialised in knitting. She
sees herself as a rebellious knitter who deals with issues different
to fashion or function.
She is typically influenced by many things such as feminism,
traditional knitting, fear, the human body, strange phenomena
etc.
Robbins works with a lot of wool as it is her preferred choice of
medium.
“I enjoy subverting this traditionally warm and nurturing fibre.”
4. Anyway
„Anyway‟, like the Orta‟s Nexus Architecture collection, shows the
same style garment manipulated and adjusted into a certain
shape. Unlike the Nexus Architecture collection, „Anyway‟ is not
made for wearing. It however still shows the connection to
Siamese twins: Identical, misshapen and linked.
This piece also suggests the
imprisonment of being trapped with
others, but also the comfort of being
part of a group.
Green is a symbolic colour for nature,
which contrasts against the complex
design that isn‟t natural. However, it
suits how Siamese twins is a natural
incident.
5. Odd Gloves
Robins also created many other garments
focusing on deformity of the body, for
instance her collection on „Odd Gloves‟.
These gloves are adjusted to suit an unique
wearer. There is gloves joint together and
gloves with extra or less fingers.
The red gloves suit well with possible
Siamese twins that are joint at the hands.
6. Short Armed and Dangerous, and
At One
Robins did a
collection on
disability where she
created garments
to specially fit
certain disabled
people. For
instance „Short
Armed and
Dangerous‟ and
„At One‟.
