Juliana Sissons
1. For my first costume for Scaramouche, I’m
thinking of using a jumper to create a
raggedy, grunge-like costume. Because of
this, I’ve decided to look at Juliana Sissons
‘Fashion & Armour’ collection for
inspiration on manipulating knit.
And further inspiration for Scaramouche’s first costume
2. Is a Fashion Designer
She studied Fashion and Textiles alongside Business
Studies at the University of Brighton
She won an ‘Outstanding Creative Achievement
Award’ and ‘International Student Knitted Textile
Award’ in 2003
3. She was granted special access in V&A Medieval &
Renaissance collection, to inspire her to create a
‘Fashion & Armour’ collection.
You are able to see obvious connections between the armour
Sissons was inspired by and her knit based work.
It is padded in areas like a suit of armour, and creases and folds
are made in the knitted garments like the gloves in the top
right-hand corner.
4. Some of her designs have gaps and
panelling. For my costume I need
to add panelling and gaps to make
the jumper I’m going to use lighter.
Like Sissons I can add different
materials for the panels, probably
fabrics that are lighter than the
jumper.
Sissons does a lot of laddering
in her work. This would be a
good effect for me to use in
my costume, to make it look
raggedy.
I could also manipulate the
shape, making
Scaramouche more
shapeless ( a bit contrasting
to Sissons style of heavly
shaping the body).
5. Scaramouche’s first costume is a mixture
between Goth and Grunge. The costume
would be baggy and shapeless like Grunge,
and dark and textured like Goth.
