2. Biography
Lucy (born 1966 in the UK) and Jorge (born 1953
in Argentina) Orta created Studio Orta in 1991.
They worked together to create social and
ecological pieces for environmental reasons in the
forms of drawing, sculptor, installation, object
making, couture, painting and silkscreen printing,
as well as staging workshops, ephemeral
interventions and performances.
3. Nexus Architecture
Because I am looking at Siamese twins, Lucy and Jorge Orta are both good designers
to look at, as they created a project called 'Nexus Architecture'. This project had a
series of similar garments joint together to link people wearing the garments. This
links well with Siamese twins for obvious reasons, but however suggests the
individual personality of the individual Siamese twin, as each garment in one of the
designs is different.
4. Nexus Architecture
For this set, Orta was strongly influenced by the Urban environment. This fits
well with the Punk movement, as a lot of the Urban environment is rather
expressive.
5. Nexus Architecture
This piece of the Nexus Architecture
has 100 bodies all linked together with
an even distance apart.
However, this way of working can
symbolise how a community can be
strong from being linked.
On the other hand, it also shows the
social distance between people, and
maybe how alone you can be in a group
of people but at the same time part of a
community. Like how Punks and Goths
stand out as individuals.
This also suggests Siamese twins and
twins in general, as they are either
physically or mentally linked. Also the
similarities in looks of twins are seen
here.
6. Nexus Architecture: Siamese
Armour
I wasn’t able to find much information on this
piece, but I found the name and structure of the
garment interesting.
This is because the garment joins together four
people suiting the title ‘Siamese’, but however
shows a struggle of trying to get away from
each other – suggests maybe that some
Siamese twins cant be separated.
