ASSIGNMENT WORK ON
polluted soils :- managment and
impact on crops
2. DEFINITION:-
• Soil contamination or soil pollution as.
part of land degradation is caused by.
the presence of xenobiotics chemicals or
other alteration in the natural soil
environment It is typically caused by
industrial activity agricultural chemicals or
improper disposal of waste
3. SOIL MANAGMENT:-
Soil management is the application of
operations practice sand treatments to protect
soil and enhance its performance (such as soil
fertility or soil mechanics) It includes soil
conservation soil amendment and optimal soil
health.
4. Control measures of soil pollution:
1. Soil erosion can be controlled by a variety of forestry
and farm practices.
Ex: Planting trees on barren slopes
Contour cultivation and strip cropping may be practiced
instead of shifting
cultivation
2. Proper dumping of unwanted materials: Excess wastes
by man and
animals pose a disposal problem. Open dumping is the
most commonly practiced
technique
5. 3. Production of natural fertilizers: Bio-pesticides
should be used in place
of toxic chemical pesticides. Organic fertilizers should
be used in place of
synthesized chemical fertilizers
4. Proper hygienic condition: People should be trained
regarding sanitary
habits.
Ex: Lavatories should be equipped with quick and
effective disposal methods.
5. Public awareness: Informal and formal public
awareness programs
6. TREATMENT OF POLLUTED SOIL
After testing to determine the type and level of
contaminants present soil can be subjected to
remediation techniques for the purposes of site
decontamination. This can be carried out in-situ,
or soil may excavated and removed for
treatment
7. METHODS OF SOIL TREATMENT
1:- Biological treatment/bioremediation :- uses
bacteria to break down substances in the soil
2:- chemical oxidation :- converts contaminated soils
into non-hazardous soils
3:- soil stabilisation involves the addition of
immobilizing agents to reduce a contaminants’
leachability
4:- physical methods, like soil washing, use water to
separate or remove contaminants
8. IMPACT ON CROP
polluted soil reduced crop yeild
30% of irrigated world is effected by
salinity soil
it decrease nutrients values of crop
effect on photosynthesis
effect of crop quality
