Cause of typhoid
fever
01
Typhoid fever is a life-threatening
infection caused by the bacterium Salmonella
Typhi. It is usually spread through contaminated
food or water. Once Salmonella Typhi bacteria
are ingested, they multiply and spread into the
bloodstream
⬇
⬇
Sing and Symptoms
The symptoms of
typhoid fever usually
develop 1 or 2 weeks
after a person
becomes infected
with the Salmonella
Typhi bacteria.

general aches and pains.
extreme tiredness (fatigue)a cough.
How is typhoid usually transmitted
Both ill persons and carriers shed Salmonella
Typhi in their feces (poop). You can get typhoid
fever if you eat food or drink beverages that have
been handled by a person who is shedding
Salmonella Typhi or if sewage contaminated with
Salmonella Typhi bacteria gets into the water you
use for drinking or washing food
⬇

Risk factors
Poor sanitation and poor hygiene
Those who travel in developing world are
also at risk

⬇
Epidemiology of typhoid
Typhoid fever infects roughly 21.6
million people (incidence of 3.6 per
1,000 population) and kills an
estimated 200,000 people every year.
In the United States, most cases of
typhoid fever arise in international
travellers.

Contaminated drinking water is a
problem in areas where typhoid

washing in hot, soapy water is the

Treatment of typhoid
⬇
⬇
The World Health Organization (WHO)
currently recommends treatment
with azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, or
ceftriaxone due to widespread resistance to
older, first‐line antimicrobials. Resistance
patterns vary in different locations and are
changing over time
