Editor's Notes
Thank you for a wonderful welcome to Bristol.
Exhilarating and inspiring
I didn’t know that…….
We would also like to thank all attendees, speakers and chairs…. Shows just how much interest there is in the sustainable development of the estuary.
Today we will find out more about what is happening in and around the estuary in terms of public sector, private sector and user groups and as long as everything runs to time, we should have ample opportunity for lively debate, which I particularly look forward to and which is one of the main functions of this Forum.
Most people in this room share a common interest- in this case the sustainable use and development of the Severn Estuary.
Some of you may have seen these images before, but for those of you who haven’t, these set the scene and illustrate the geographical area and range of themes that we will be discussing today. As you can see, it’s a large area involving a plethora of activities, including industrial, conservation and recreation uses.
SEPs aims can be found in our new Strategic Business Plan, and are as follows:
1,2,3,4,5
So overall, we aim to facilitate joint working and effective communications.
…. And this is how we do it. The core team undertakes multiple tasks and one way of presenting the work we deliver is by using the analogy of a patchwork quilt. So this is the “SEP quilt”.
As well as organising the annual Forum and joint meetings, we provide secretariat functions and communicate information about our and our partners activities via our website, newsletters, E bulletins and information leaflets. The core of our work centres around a database which has +2500 contacts.
We are also currently developing a State of the Severn report that will give a snapshot summary of the state of the existing human and natural environment.
We (Christine!) also work closely with the ASERA (Association of Severn Estuary Relevant Authorities) partners to deliver European legislation to protect important habitats and species in the estuary and a new management plan is currently being developed in support of this.
From time to time we facilitate public consultation processes, and in the last year have assisted Shoreline Management Planning and Marine Planning consultations. We also directly feed into a number of initiatives and promote the need for co-operation, transparency and involvement of the public in decision-making processes.
More recently, we’ve become involved in a number of research projects which help us to fulfill our aims, but more importantly raises the profile of the estuary and helps bring best practice from Europe.
I could go on, but if you would like to know more about what we can offer and how you can join the Partnership, take a look at the SEP poster outside or see our website.
OK, so how does all this relate to the line up that we have today?
We have done our best to attract speakers that can represent our diversity. We should have a good overview of developments in the statutory sector, the private sector and the public.
We’ll start with a review of why marine planning is needed and how it will work from an English & Welsh perspective, and will then broaden our horizons by looking at how our important species and habitats are being protected via European legislation before coming back to local flooding and coastal erosion risk management.
We’ll then take a trip around some of the industries on the Estuary and learn about the proposed nuclear power developments at Hinkley, and Bristol’s deep water container terminal.
The last session follows a theme of “time” where we look at futures research, past archaeological treasures and the perspective of time from an individual. We will then try to tie the day together by giving an annual review of the estuary activities from SEPs perspective.
Throughout there will be opportunities for questions and discussions, and I hope you will take full advantage of these.
Hopefully this will provide something of interest for everyone, so without further ado, let us reach out to our first session which will look at public sector developments.
Thank you and enjoy the day.
