John Buttivant - Environment Agency Bristol Channel Strategic Coastal Group, Shoreline and Flood Risk Management John has a BSc in Geography from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. He is a chartered Water and Environmental Manager and a Chartered Environmentalist. Since joining the Environment Agency in 2001 John has had a key role in Coastal Management at all levels from individual flood defence schemes to strategic management planning and regional coastal monitoring. Currently, he is a Senior Coastal Advisor working for the Environment Agency’s Wessex Area, where he maintains a Strategic Overview of coastal activities and works closely with local authorities and other stakeholders to manage the risks of flooding and coastal erosion. The Coastal Groups play a key role in the integrated management of coastal flood and erosion risks. They are responsible for production of the Shoreline Management Plans and have key roles in the sharing of best practice and overview of coastal issues. Local Authorities and the Environment Agency are working hard to address the demands of society for effective coastal defences as well as meeting legal obligations to mitigate habitat losses. The challenges posed to the coastal authorities by increasing sea levels adds to the pressure at a time when direct government funding is decreasing. The Coastal Groups have a vital role to play in assisting the coastal operating authorities as they seek external partners and partnership funding to deliver improvements to defences whilst acting as a focus for innovative solutions that meet the demands of society.

Gold coast management

The Gold Coast shoreline management plan was needed to address beach erosion caused by groynes blocking longshore sediment transport and exacerbated by storms. The plan used a combination of "soft" engineering solutions like beach nourishment through the Tweed Sand Bypass project and dune stabilization, and "hard" engineering like an artificial reef at Narrowneck, to widen beaches and protect coastal development while maintaining recreational opportunities like surfing. Monitoring indicates the strategies have been successful in maintaining beach widths and improving habitats.

Eleven marine plans will be developed to guide decision-making in marine areas based on the overarching Marine Policy Statement. The plans will balance various activities and environmental protection. Stakeholder engagement is a key part of the planning process.

- A team of 7 people based in Warrington, England started a project to help develop Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) in the Irish Sea region to protect important habitats and species. - The project's goals are to inform local stakeholders about MCZs, create a group to represent different sea users, and host workshops to develop recommendations for MCZ locations that meet ecological guidelines and have consensus from stakeholders. - The recommendations will then be submitted to government agencies for formal consultation and designation of final MCZs by 2012.

It is our responsibility to create a culture of operational professionalism and reliability through active participation. In order to counterbalance the world’s energy demand, we must produce oil and gas while considering that the more efficiently the energy is produced, the more affordable the energy will be. Profile: Sue Kidd is an academic and chartered town planner from the University of Liverpool’s Department of Geography and Planning. Sue has acted as an advisor to the EU, government departments, government agencies, regional and local authorities and NGO’s. She has a particular interest in integrated planning and much of her work has focussed on sustainable development in coastal and marine areas. She has been at the forefront of the theory and practice of Marine Spatial Planning and is currently engaged in a range of projects assisting the roll out of new marine planning and management arrangements in the Celtic Seas and wider European seas. Sue is a past chair of the North West Coastal Forum, is currently part of the small team that acts as secretariat of the Irish Sea Maritime Forum and has recently taken up the role of Sea and Society lead for the new Liverpool Institute for Sustainable Coasts and Oceans. Cross-border Marine Planning in the North West: Challenges & Opportunities After years of stakeholder lobbying we have reached an exciting stage in the development of marine planning in the UK with all administrations busy rolling out their first wave of marine plans. This presentation will start by highlighting the historic significance of this work and by providing an overview of the current position on marine planning in each of the four devolved UK administrations. It will then consider the challenges and opportunities for cross-border marine planning with particular reference to the North West of England which shares some of the complexities that face marine planning in the Severn Estuary. Challenges that will be explored include complex institutional arrangements, ongoing financial restraint, development trends and the uncertain implications of Brexit. Profile: Alex is the CITiZAN Archaeologist for Outreach in Portsmouth, based in the Nautical Archaeology Society offices. She, along with her colleague, works to train new and existing archaeological groups on how to identify, record and monitor archaeology and work to raise awareness of coastal heritage to local communities. CITiZAN in the Severn As coastal archaeologists we face processes which are destructive to archaeology but cannot be protected against. The coastal zone does not, and cannot be afforded the protection that terrestrial archaeology, or even maritime archaeology to a certain degree, enjoys. When looking at Historic Environment Records the coast often looks sparse, we have thousands of records which have been identified through development archaeology but coastal development is very limited, for obvious reasons. So how do we work to identify and record an archaeological resource which is unquantified, fragile, constantly eroding and spans thousands of miles? The CITIZAN (Coastal and Intertidal Zone Archaeological Network) project aims to do just this, with its three regional teams covering hundreds of miles each and working in environments from low lying estuaries to granite cliffs. This presentation will look at the recording of complex archaeological sites in the diverse coastal zone, focusing on the use of new technologies and their accessibility with a focus on our work in the Severn Estuary.
