have him for a long time” ,she didn’t

with a little newborn baby.Six children are
huddled into one bed to keep from
freezing, for they have no fire. There is
nothing to eat over there, and the oldest boy
came to tell me they were suffering hunger
and cold.
Quote 4
every one rejoiced but Beth. She lay in that
heavy stupor, alike unconscious of hope and
joy, doubt and danger. It was a piteous sight, the
once rosy face so changed and vacant. The
once busy hands so weak and wasted, the once
smiling lips quite dumb, and the once
pretty,well-kept hair scattered rough and
tangled on the pillow

fortunes Rich or poor, we will keep
together and be happy in one another”.

eyes a great change seemed to have taken place. The
fever flush and took of pain were gone, and the beloved
little face looked so pale and peaceful in its utter repose

over this dearest of her sisters, she kissed the damp
forehead with her heart on her lips, and softly whispered,
“Good-by, my Beth. Good-by!”.
Quote 7
I saw something I liked this morning, and I
meant to tell the dinner, but I forgot, said Beth,
puuting Jo’s topsy-turvy basket in order as she
talked. “When I went to get some oyster for
Hannah, Mr. Laurance was in fish shop, but he
didn’t see me, for I kept behind the fish barre,
and he was busy with Mr. Cutter if he would let
her do some scrubbing for a bit of fish, because
she hadn’t any dinner for her children, and had
been disappointed of day’s work. Mr. Cutter
was in hurry and said “No”, rather crossly,so
she was going away, looking hungry and sorry”

the other, who is very sick in Washington hospital.’ he answered quitely.”
“you have done a great deal for your country, sir,’ I said, feeling respect now,
instead of pity.”
“Not mite more than I ought, ma’am. I’d go myself. If I was any use. As I
ain’t, give my boys, and give them free”
