STETHOGRAPHY
STUDY OF RESPIATORY MOVEMENTS
By
Satyanath Reddy. K
•Stethography is the process of recording of
respiratory movements in man. The instrument
used is called stethograph and the recording
obtained is called stethogram
•The stethograph is a corrugated rubber tube, closed at
both ends. The cavity of the tube is connected to a
tambour by a noncompressible tube. Stretch on the
corrugated rubber tube increases the volume which
reduces the pressure in the system which pulls the drum of
the tambour down. A pen on the tip of the pointer,
connected to the tambour, writes on a moving drum which
gives the pattern of the changes in the volume in the
system. When the stethograph applied to the chest of a
person, the chest movements can be recorded.

PROCEDURE
Stethography means recording the movements
of the chest occurring during respiration. It is
a very simple procedure which can illustrate a
large number of facts about the respiratory
physiology. The following are some important
features which can be elicited.
1.The subject was asked to sit comfortably on a
stool with his/her back towards the recording
apparatus.
2.The stethograph was tied around the chest of
the subject at the level of the fourth
intercostals space and the tambour...
3.The writing lever/pen was brought in contact
with the paper of the kymograph and the
drum was set to move at slow...
4.Normal respiration was recorded for about
5cm
Effect of swallowing
Effect of voluntary hyperventillation
Effect of exercise
Effect of breath holding time
BREATH HOLDING
Effect of sneezing, coughing,
laughing, talking
