Abstract:
In this globe of business games and gambles, you need a lot of
efforts to not only survive but also to establish yourself. That too when
the output requires acceptance it is completely up to you to make sure
you get to the right people at the right time knowing their demand and
how they would react. One such successful story is the story of knitting
industry. The importance of knitting as to when it started and of now,
there is a bigger difference. Once it started as a product of luxury and
currently it stands as a basic need. This article throws light on the
transition from WANT to NEED of knitting fabrics.
Introduction:
People get inspiration from everything. Just like how atoms inspire
to know the glory in smaller particles and sun motivates us to dream big.
So in that way, the diverse traditions getting reviewed attract a lot of
people and knitting is not an exemption. Today’s fashion deals, not only
with beauty and outlook but also with comfort. The use of knitwear is
expanded much, currently ranging from intimate apparel to sportswear.
From something that requires only softness up to something those
require to sheath our bodies. Starting from scraps, the advancements in
technology has led to rapid transformation of the industry. These
transformations have reduced the limitations thus contributing to added
advantages.
Coming to market, the knitting market is categorized into segments
based on the technology used, based on the end product and depending
on the specialties of the end product. The elasticity of the material gives
it a greater value. Now a day’s manufacturers are keener on replacing
their old machines with new ones, thus paving way to the advancement
of machine market too. Mechanical machines have given way to
electronic machines that provide great speed and in turn increase
productivity rate.
Industrial analysis of knitting has fore-casted that by 2020 the
market for knitwear is supposed to grow by 15% in comparison with
2015. The craving desire for trends, the want for a lavish lifestyle,
popularity and the need to be noted have invigorated the growth of the
industry. The current market demand is stressed with shape and structure
thus wanting to enhance the product as well as the price of the product.
There is a untiring competition between the manufacturers and the
marketers as who would grab the orders and who would strike the best
bargain. These cut-throat competitions have made manufacturers offer
multi pack combos and products at throwaway prices.

Importance of Indian Textile Industry:
The role of Indian textiles in the Indian economy is more than just
amazing. The textile sector stands second in the Indian economy after
Agriculture, which is out primary profession. Perhaps the most
significant thing to be noted in textile economy is that it stands as a
major industrial producer as well as it gulps in a prime part of export
earnings. The most supreme part of Indian textile industry is that it is a
self-reliant industry, that it helps itself from the initial until the final
stage, with each stage adding substantial value to its output. This
segment is one among the leading segments of Indian economy and is
also the largest source of foreign exchange. Amongst all other countries,
the share of India in export of textile and apparel increased from 2.8
percent in 2008 to 6.3 percent in 2012.
Coming to position, India takes the second position in production
of Textiles and garments with China being the first. In production of
cotton, it stands Third with China and USA being the dominators, While
in consumption, it stands second after China, ignoring USA. Besides just
dominating, the textile and garment industry fulfils the pivotal role in
Indian economy, by being a major foreign exchange earner and by
employing a total workforce of 35 Million. This sector contributes to an
average of 16 per cent industrial production and 18 per cent export
earnings.
Contribution of Knitting in Indian Textile Industry:
In the stream of textile market, the share of knitting comes up to
39%, which means, it is one of the prime share holder of textile sector.
This sector generates total revenue of about $ 5.6M, which is about 20%
of the total industrial output. Being just a matter of yarns, this industry
fills in 8% of the total GDP. When compared with exporting, knitting
market deals with 31%, which is comparatively a bigger amount when
decoded. This segment provides employment to 4million people which
are about 18% of the country’s total workforce. The worldwide share of
knitting industry is 40% among which India holds 18%. With the Asian
market still growing the western countries continue to shine in this trade
ventures.
The Start of Knitting Industry:
“Every great story has an unnoticeable starting”, in the same
originated the story of knitting. Tracing back the origin of knitting, it
dates back to centuries ago, by being used by Europeans as a brand of
luxury. The Europeans invented knitting so that they can record the lives
of great kings and their conquests in the form of story. This later
developed even more and established itself. In India, it started in
Calcutta, which is the cultural capital of India and commercial capital of
East India as a small cottage industry. These cottage industries on the
passing of days, developed into a multi fold business, thus currently
making a significant economic development as well as providing
employment.
The Sectors of Knitting Industry:
The whole of knitting industry comes under three large categories
depending upon their nature of work. A single sector never can produce
or withstand all the flows and components of the industry. Hence to
tolerate and manage these pressures, the industry is split into three
components such as,
1. Knitting
2. Knitting Garments
3. Knitting Fabrics and Garments
Knitting:
In knitting, the manufacturing takes place only for two types such
as warp knitting or weft knitting. Though varieties may or may not be
possible, in order to reduce complications, the outcome is limited to only
these two compartments.
Knitting Garments:
This part of the industry follows three categories. The categories
included are, Panel knitting, Cutting and Assembling and fully cut
garments.
Knitting Fabrics and Garments:
This section takes care of production of fabrics and garments,
irrespective of the type they belong to. They take bigger quantity orders
and have a bigger profit margin and thus working a step ahead in
achieving it.
Types of Knitting Industries:
Depending on the capital source, the knitting industry is classified
into two broad categories. Those two categories are Auxiliary industries
and Allied industries.
Auxiliary Industry:
Auxiliary industries are those that operate independently but have
are dependent on the parent industry. They are like those partly parasitic
beings that can live independently but needs a backup for survival. The
categories of units that come under it are:
1. Embroidery industry
2. Label making industry
3. Packing material industry
4. Laminating industry
5. Needle making industry
Allied Industry:
Allied industries are those that work under a joint collaboration,
having two or more partnerships thus helping them in their financial
front. They share whatever their part of profit comes depending on their
share on investment. The industries that come under this sector are:
1. Spinning Industry
2. Yarn dyeing Industry
3. Fabric dyeing and Finishing Industry
4. Fabric Printing Industry
5. Garment washing Industry
SWOT Analysis:
SWOT analysis serves as a personal assessment of the company,
by analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the zone for which
this is done. The main benefit of this is that, it helps us know the
strength so that we can add value to it and also helps recognizing our
weakness so that the flaws can be reduced or worked upon. The SWOT
analysis report of knitting industry is as follows:
S-Strength:
 The great impression colors of products
 Selling on the low price of products Design of scarf is a
unique style on area
 Extends the products to the men’s style
 Recognizes the mission, goals, and vision of marketing plan
W-Weakness:
 Management needs to improvement
 Sales revenues are negative yet
 Workforce needs to improvement
 Quality of delivering is not perfect Management of company
is Junior-level
O-Opportunities:
 Growing demands for quality

 Decreasing the customers by economic crisis
 The cost of company registration is high
The Role of India:
Export Strategies:
The total export of the textile industry in the past years goes as
follows:
Year 2013 to 2014
Target Achievements
25485 26471
Year 2014 to 2015
Target Achievements
32350 31056
Year 2015 to 2016
Target Achievements
39600 30971
In accordance with the export figures released by the DGC & IS,
the total worthy of the clothing exported during the time period of 2013-
14 was 26.82 billion USD, that during the year 2014-15 was 33.31
billion USD, and the market during 2015-16 was 31.71billion USD.
When comparing each one a negative growth of 4.82% was recorded,
the reasons were given as the volatility in the EU market during the year
2014thus severely affecting India's T&C exports to EU. This caused the
EU textile industry to witness a negative growth of 13% which
ultimately resulted in a 1.3billion shortfall. The main reason for this is
claimed to be the policy realignment of the apparel sector that urgently
required a duty drawback, incentives and duty reduction.
With the major exporters being US, Canada, Europe, Australia,
Japan and Middle East it said that in the year previous year, the export
was 11,500Cr INR and this year as per forecast, a 11% increase is
predicted. The major competitors of India are the Western Europe
countries such as Hong Kong, Bangkok and Taiwan. Despite all these
competitions, India has carved a niche for its knitted apparels in global
market. The highlights of India are its quality, competitive pricing and
innovative styles.
In a view to promote the share of India in global textile trade, the
ministry of textiles has proposed 50 new textile parks, out of which 30
have already been sanctioned by the government. It is noted that the
cost of the sanctioned 30 parks comes around 710million USD. These
plans will not only make the industry cost competitive, but also make
increased production which in turn boosts up the country’s economy.

Global Giants:
To meet the target goal of the year 2021 to export RMG of worth
500billion every year, the global market has to rely heavily on knitting
and knitwear industries. This sector proves as strength of any developing
or developed country contributing a relatable part of the economy. And
so every country takes a lot of responsibility in investing more in
knitting industry. In recent times there is no evidence of new cottage
knitting industries setup. All we can observe are, most of the big
companies buying new machineries just to build vertical capacity, thus
in turn reducing outsourcing while knitting. The main reason as to why
this sector flourishes is that investments and advancements are done not
only in machinery and capacity building but also in reducing cost and
value addition. Knitting units are moving towards increasing
productivity, efficiency, reducing cost and increasing automation.

NIA
“NIA was born following a viewing of the film: The True Cost. The
creator behind the label, Merica, decided she no longer would shop for
fast fashion, and was sick of the trail of waste left behind by the
industry. Either due to the processing of the materials, or the fact that the
clothing falls apart after a couple of washes! No, she wanted to design
clothing that we could live our lives in and that could stand the test of
our unpredictable lives. For her debut line she created seam-free, high
quality basics from the finest Italian Merino wool in small batches.
Using Merino Wool means the styles are biodegradable. The pieces were
constructed on a 3D knitting machine, pretty
cool! The process is so efficient that it is extremely low impact and
environmentally friendly!

Statistics of the Most Powerful Nation:
Creating a global ranking doesn’t mean calculating just the overall
share and components of knitting. It also requires analysis of the top
major powers. This way we are in a position to compare two ideals.
Firstly the top country in the world and secondly the country that stands
top in the category of knitwear sectors. Both these dominating factors
are considered. Moving one after the other first comes the ‘World’s most
powerful nation’ which without a change absolutely is the US. Knowing
about the knitting statistics of US, EU and USA are the main consumers
of knitting products while China and India are the leading exporters. The
players dominating the country are Golden lady, SPA, LLC, Hanes
brand, Triumph apparel and even more leading players. As per the
survey taken in 2014 in USA, reports say that there are 3178knitters
distributed across USA. They are distributed as in the following
percentage:
Percentage Origin
22% North East
24% South East
28% Mid-East
11% West
7% North West
8% South West
Analyzing the gist of the economy of USA, the final report is
submitted as follows,
Year Situation
2008 Knit shipments had its high value
in about $1.6B.
Then again production failed to
regain its strength.
2010 Rapid growth. Increase by 10%
2015 Value of knit fabrics=$1.3B
(Decline of -14% against previous
yr)
Considering the past analysis, there were fluctuations in the US
knitting market. The market has faced rapid decline as well as raise on
the period of 2007 to 2015. This is proved by the output figures
decreased at an average annual rate of 31%, which in turn boosted up
rapidly since the last two decades.
The distribution of knitting industries falls into three wide
classifications based on the nature of products and by products the
industries produce.
The classifications are:
• Warp knits and knit finishes holds the first place with the highest
share in 2015 with about 32%.
• Circular knits have achieved about 30%.
• Other small products like hosiery gives a considerable amount
which includes small knitting units on the whole contributing to
about 38%.
That one ‘Bigshot’ of Knitting Industry:
Moving on to the next big segment, it comes to the biggest
shareholder in knitting industry, Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is one of the prime most knitting sectors in the world.
This country has a historical reputation in the production of textile
products and holds a specialty position in the production of Dhakai
Muslin. It started at that time from when irrespective of gender; people
are involved in hand knitting especially in making sweaters. These skills
have passed on from one generation to other which ultimately resulted in
conversion of talent into strategy and thus paving way to knitting
business.
Knitting & Knitwear Trends:
Knitting and knitwear firms in Bangladesh once were mainly
located in and around Narayangonj. But now it is well spread throughout
major garment manufacturing zones. The hosiery sector was expanded
and accelerated since 1980’s and 1990’s after the expansion of RMG
sector. The industry expanded both vertically and horizontally to meet
the growing demand for fabric within a few years. Due to the increasing
demand of knitwear product, the volume of export in different countries
drastically increased.
As of now, in an average there are 4,000 RMG firms operating in
Bangladesh out of which, 95% are locally owned. Among the increasing
domination of woven garments in textile industry, the share of knit
garment products has been increasing since the early 1990s. Such
products accounts for 40% of the country’s total RMG export earnings.
Amidst all various kinds of knitting garments produced, only few
garments continue to constitute a major share. Some of these, major
products involve, T-Shirts, trousers, jackets and sweaters. The main
reason for this narrow product concentration as per experts is that the
economics of scale for large-scale production and export quota holdings
in those corresponding categories.
The Travel of Bangladesh in Knitting Development is as follows:
Year Issue
1970-1980 Early stages of growth
1982-1985 Boom days
1985 Imposition of quota restriction
1990 Knit sector developed significantly
1993 Child labor issue and its significance
2003 Withdrawal of Canadian quota restriction
2005 Phase out of quota restriction
2006 Riots and strikes by garment labors
2007-2008 Stable growth
2008-2015 Continuous growth
Size of the Bangladesh Knitting Industry:
Sub sector No of units Machine

Local
market
2000 5,000knit/M 500m 24,000
The last twenty years have attained incomparable growth in this
sector which is the largest export market. In terms of foreign exchange
earnings it had earned a lot which contributes a major part towards
exports, industrialization as well as the GDP. It is quite extraordinary
that all these changes have happened in a very short while thus making
abrupt changes in the economy. This export oriented sector comprises of
95% woven and 90% knit wear components. The cumulative foreign
exchange value of knit wear from this sector since the start is estimated
to be around 70.56 billion USD.
Having a wider knowledge about the product diversification, the
development path of RMG exports can be classified into two phases, the
one which started and the one that developed. During the starting phase
it is the woven category that contributed the most and the second phase
it is the emergence of knitwear products that powered the double digit
growth since the start. In this competitive economy of ever changing
fashion, the only way of survival is the product diversification that
assures continuous business success. Apart from material diversification,
the RMG sector also provides diversification in terms o fend products.
This classification is done in the forms of shirts, t-shirts, suits as well as
high branded jeans and jackets.
The detailed analysis of the exports and their turn over is in comparison
with their big market, is given here:
Summarizing all these, the total value is given as,
Product Target (Million USD) Performance over target
Knitwear 13,215.61 4,058.42
Woven 13,681.77 3,694.24
The demand of knitwear is in an increasing phase all over. Even in
the last year, when the apparel exports has seen the lowest growth in
15years, the knitting export increased by 3.01%. The net value of
knitting export stood to 13757.3 million USD in FY 2016-17 while it
was 133555.42 million USD. For the FY 2017-18 Bangladesh has set an
ambitious target to increase knitwear export to 15.1billion USD.
Research & Methodology:
Based on the survey of the Craft Yarn Council(CYC), a
commission has setup and researches has been carried on which states
that currently the advancements are going on, not only in terms of
industry but also in handmade works. Enthusiasts from all age groups
are more involved in knitting and crocheting as a part of their craft
activities. The survey throws light on 3,100 crocheters and knitters from
worldwide and their daily activities, the summery of that report is as
follows:
Based on their age group, they are distributed as:
Age group Percentage
18 to 34 years 15%
35 to 44 years 13%
45 to 54 years 23%
55 to 64 years 32%
Over 65 years 17%
Among these crocheters and knitters,
48% are crocheters;
32% are knitters and
20% of them did both.
When analyzed on what they make, it showed attractive results. They
made scarves, hats, and other small level of hand products.
Profile of a normal Knitting enthusiast:
• Spending= $801 (average)
• Time spent= 10hrs/week
• Knitting Projects completed= 24 in an average
• Expertise in knitting= 40% expert; 57% intermediate
Favorable Factors for Knitting:
The role of knitwear within textile sector shows an increasing
pace, as being preferred comparatively over woven garments due to
their virtues of comfort, stretch ability, easy care, and the pattern of
being built within the knitted fabric structure. The main reason for
this is the capital investment required is comparatively less when
related with other fabric units, even the time taken for this is less.
• Modern knitting machines particularly warp knitting machines can
produce various type of technical textiles (medical textiles,
automobile textiles, geotextiles, etc.)
• Computer aided designing and manufacturing in knitting have
made it possible to manufacture any desired structure within a
short time at reasonable price.
Conclusion:
Emerging from the few past years, the knitwear industry has
attained magnificent growth. Starting from the scarp, it attained
stardom within, a minimal time. When analyzing the reasons and
trade analytics the main qualities of knitting that triggered its
immediate growth are the following requirements of knitting:
• Labor less organized.
• Floor space: Compared to auto loom for the same production
1. Warp knitting 1/10th
2. Weft knitting 1/8th
The power consumption required for knitting mills are very much
less when compared with other looms.
In case of thinking of the possibilities of starting up an industry,
knitting industry can always be a very good choice. The reasons
may be its feasibility and fewer demands which help it to flourish
in this economy.

The textile sector stands second in the Indian economy after Agriculture, which is out primary profession. Perhaps the most significant thing to be noted in textile economy is that it stands as a major industrial producer as well as it gulps in a prime part of export earnings. The most supreme part of Indian textile industry is that it is a self-reliant industry, that it helps itself from the initial until the final stage, with each stage adding substantial value to its output. This segment is one among the leading segments of Indian economy and is also the largest source of foreign exchange. Amongst all other countries, the share of India in export of textile and apparel increased from 2.8 percent in 2008 to 6.3 percent in 2012. Coming to position, India takes the second position in production of Textiles and garments with China being the first. In production of cotton, it stands Third with China and USA being the dominators, While in consumption, it stands second after China, ignoring USA. Besides just dominating, the textile and garment industry fulfils the pivotal role in Indian economy, by being a major foreign exchange earner and by employing a total workforce of 35 Million. This sector contributes to an
  • 5. average of 16 per cent industrial production and 18 per cent export earnings. Contribution of Knitting in Indian Textile Industry: In the stream of textile market, the share of knitting comes up to 39%, which means, it is one of the prime share holder of textile sector. This sector generates total revenue of about $ 5.6M, which is about 20% of the total industrial output. Being just a matter of yarns, this industry fills in 8% of the total GDP. When compared with exporting, knitting market deals with 31%, which is comparatively a bigger amount when decoded. This segment provides employment to 4million people which are about 18% of the country’s total workforce. The worldwide share of knitting industry is 40% among which India holds 18%. With the Asian market still growing the western countries continue to shine in this trade ventures. The Start of Knitting Industry: “Every great story has an unnoticeable starting”, in the same originated the story of knitting. Tracing back the origin of knitting, it dates back to centuries ago, by being used by Europeans as a brand of luxury. The Europeans invented knitting so that they can record the lives of great kings and their conquests in the form of story. This later developed even more and established itself. In India, it started in Calcutta, which is the cultural capital of India and commercial capital of East India as a small cottage industry. These cottage industries on the passing of days, developed into a multi fold business, thus currently making a significant economic development as well as providing employment.
  • 6. The Sectors of Knitting Industry: The whole of knitting industry comes under three large categories depending upon their nature of work. A single sector never can produce or withstand all the flows and components of the industry. Hence to tolerate and manage these pressures, the industry is split into three components such as, 1. Knitting 2. Knitting Garments 3. Knitting Fabrics and Garments Knitting: In knitting, the manufacturing takes place only for two types such as warp knitting or weft knitting. Though varieties may or may not be possible, in order to reduce complications, the outcome is limited to only these two compartments. Knitting Garments: This part of the industry follows three categories. The categories included are, Panel knitting, Cutting and Assembling and fully cut garments. Knitting Fabrics and Garments: This section takes care of production of fabrics and garments, irrespective of the type they belong to. They take bigger quantity orders and have a bigger profit margin and thus working a step ahead in achieving it.
  • 7. Types of Knitting Industries: Depending on the capital source, the knitting industry is classified into two broad categories. Those two categories are Auxiliary industries and Allied industries. Auxiliary Industry: Auxiliary industries are those that operate independently but have are dependent on the parent industry. They are like those partly parasitic beings that can live independently but needs a backup for survival. The categories of units that come under it are: 1. Embroidery industry 2. Label making industry 3. Packing material industry 4. Laminating industry 5. Needle making industry Allied Industry: Allied industries are those that work under a joint collaboration, having two or more partnerships thus helping them in their financial front. They share whatever their part of profit comes depending on their share on investment. The industries that come under this sector are: 1. Spinning Industry 2. Yarn dyeing Industry 3. Fabric dyeing and Finishing Industry 4. Fabric Printing Industry 5. Garment washing Industry
  • 8. SWOT Analysis: SWOT analysis serves as a personal assessment of the company, by analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the zone for which this is done. The main benefit of this is that, it helps us know the strength so that we can add value to it and also helps recognizing our weakness so that the flaws can be reduced or worked upon. The SWOT analysis report of knitting industry is as follows: S-Strength:  The great impression colors of products  Selling on the low price of products Design of scarf is a unique style on area  Extends the products to the men’s style  Recognizes the mission, goals, and vision of marketing plan W-Weakness:  Management needs to improvement  Sales revenues are negative yet  Workforce needs to improvement  Quality of delivering is not perfect Management of company is Junior-level O-Opportunities:  Growing demands for quality  Increasing sales via online marketing  Extending promotion via social media  Increasing sales on winter and windy weather condition  Extending marketing on shopping mall
  • 9. T-Threats:  Increasing competition in area  Competes with the online small business and on-store  Decreasing the customers by economic crisis  The cost of company registration is high The Role of India: Export Strategies: The total export of the textile industry in the past years goes as follows: Year 2013 to 2014 Target Achievements 25485 26471 Year 2014 to 2015 Target Achievements 32350 31056 Year 2015 to 2016 Target Achievements 39600 30971 In accordance with the export figures released by the DGC & IS, the total worthy of the clothing exported during the time period of 2013- 14 was 26.82 billion USD, that during the year 2014-15 was 33.31
  • 10. billion USD, and the market during 2015-16 was 31.71billion USD. When comparing each one a negative growth of 4.82% was recorded, the reasons were given as the volatility in the EU market during the year 2014thus severely affecting India's T&C exports to EU. This caused the EU textile industry to witness a negative growth of 13% which ultimately resulted in a 1.3billion shortfall. The main reason for this is claimed to be the policy realignment of the apparel sector that urgently required a duty drawback, incentives and duty reduction. With the major exporters being US, Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan and Middle East it said that in the year previous year, the export was 11,500Cr INR and this year as per forecast, a 11% increase is predicted. The major competitors of India are the Western Europe countries such as Hong Kong, Bangkok and Taiwan. Despite all these competitions, India has carved a niche for its knitted apparels in global market. The highlights of India are its quality, competitive pricing and innovative styles. In a view to promote the share of India in global textile trade, the ministry of textiles has proposed 50 new textile parks, out of which 30 have already been sanctioned by the government. It is noted that the cost of the sanctioned 30 parks comes around 710million USD. These plans will not only make the industry cost competitive, but also make increased production which in turn boosts up the country’s economy.

This sector proves as strength of any developing or developed country contributing a relatable part of the economy. And so every country takes a lot of responsibility in investing more in knitting industry. In recent times there is no evidence of new cottage knitting industries setup. All we can observe are, most of the big companies buying new machineries just to build vertical capacity, thus in turn reducing outsourcing while knitting. The main reason as to why this sector flourishes is that investments and advancements are done not only in machinery and capacity building but also in reducing cost and value addition. Knitting units are moving towards increasing productivity, efficiency, reducing cost and increasing automation. It also requires analysis of the top major powers. This way we are in a position to compare two ideals. Firstly the top country in the world and secondly the country that stands top in the category of knitwear sectors. Both these dominating factors are considered. Moving one after the other first comes the ‘World’s most powerful nation’ which without a change absolutely is the US. Knowing about the knitting statistics of US, EU and USA are the main consumers of knitting products while China and India are the leading exporters. The players dominating the country are Golden lady, SPA, LLC, Hanes brand, Triumph apparel and even more leading players. As per the survey taken in 2014 in USA, reports say that there are 3178knitters distributed across USA. They are distributed as in the following percentage: Percentage Origin 22% North East 24% South East 28% Mid-East 11% West
  • 20. 7% North West 8% South West Analyzing the gist of the economy of USA, the final report is submitted as follows, Year Situation 2008 Knit shipments had its high value in about $1.6B. Then again production failed to regain its strength. 2010 Rapid growth. Increase by 10% 2015 Value of knit fabrics=$1.3B (Decline of -14% against previous yr) Considering the past analysis, there were fluctuations in the US knitting market. The market has faced rapid decline as well as raise on the period of 2007 to 2015. This is proved by the output figures decreased at an average annual rate of 31%, which in turn boosted up rapidly since the last two decades. The distribution of knitting industries falls into three wide classifications based on the nature of products and by products the industries produce.
  • 21. The classifications are: • Warp knits and knit finishes holds the first place with the highest share in 2015 with about 32%. • Circular knits have achieved about 30%. • Other small products like hosiery gives a considerable amount which includes small knitting units on the whole contributing to about 38%. That one ‘Bigshot’ of Knitting Industry: Moving on to the next big segment, it comes to the biggest shareholder in knitting industry, Bangladesh. Bangladesh is one of the prime most knitting sectors in the world. This country has a historical reputation in the production of textile products and holds a specialty position in the production of Dhakai Muslin. It started at that time from when irrespective of gender; people are involved in hand knitting especially in making sweaters. These skills have passed on from one generation to other which ultimately resulted in conversion of talent into strategy and thus paving way to knitting business. Knitting & Knitwear Trends: Knitting and knitwear firms in Bangladesh once were mainly located in and around Narayangonj. But now it is well spread throughout major garment manufacturing zones. The hosiery sector was expanded and accelerated since 1980’s and 1990’s after the expansion of RMG sector. The industry expanded both vertically and horizontally to meet the growing demand for fabric within a few years. Due to the increasing
  • 22. demand of knitwear product, the volume of export in different countries drastically increased. As of now, in an average there are 4,000 RMG firms operating in Bangladesh out of which, 95% are locally owned. Among the increasing domination of woven garments in textile industry, the share of knit garment products has been increasing since the early 1990s. Such products accounts for 40% of the country’s total RMG export earnings. Amidst all various kinds of knitting garments produced, only few garments continue to constitute a major share. Some of these, major products involve, T-Shirts, trousers, jackets and sweaters. The main reason for this narrow product concentration as per experts is that the economics of scale for large-scale production and export quota holdings in those corresponding categories. The Travel of Bangladesh in Knitting Development is as follows: Year Issue 1970-1980 Early stages of growth 1982-1985 Boom days 1985 Imposition of quota restriction 1990 Knit sector developed significantly 1993 Child labor issue and its significance
  • 23. 2003 Withdrawal of Canadian quota restriction 2005 Phase out of quota restriction 2006 Riots and strikes by garment labors 2007-2008 Stable growth 2008-2015 Continuous growth Size of the Bangladesh Knitting Industry: Sub sector No of units Machine capacity Production capacity Manpower Export oriented 800 12000knit/Dy/M 3,600m 3,00,000 Local market 2000 5,000knit/M 500m 24,000
  • 24. The last twenty years have attained incomparable growth in this sector which is the largest export market. In terms of foreign exchange earnings it had earned a lot which contributes a major part towards exports, industrialization as well as the GDP. It is quite extraordinary that all these changes have happened in a very short while thus making abrupt changes in the economy. This export oriented sector comprises of 95% woven and 90% knit wear components. The cumulative foreign exchange value of knit wear from this sector since the start is estimated to be around 70.56 billion USD. Having a wider knowledge about the product diversification, the development path of RMG exports can be classified into two phases, the one which started and the one that developed. During the starting phase it is the woven category that contributed the most and the second phase it is the emergence of knitwear products that powered the double digit growth since the start. In this competitive economy of ever changing fashion, the only way of survival is the product diversification that assures continuous business success. Apart from material diversification, the RMG sector also provides diversification in terms o fend products. This classification is done in the forms of shirts, t-shirts, suits as well as high branded jeans and jackets. The detailed analysis of the exports and their turn over is in comparison with their big market, is given here:
  • 25.
  • 26.
  • 27. Summarizing all these, the total value is given as, Product Target (Million USD) Performance over target Knitwear 13,215.61 4,058.42 Woven 13,681.77 3,694.24 The demand of knitwear is in an increasing phase all over. Even in the last year, when the apparel exports has seen the lowest growth in 15years, the knitting export increased by 3.01%. The net value of knitting export stood to 13757.3 million USD in FY 2016-17 while it was 133555.42 million USD. For the FY 2017-18 Bangladesh has set an ambitious target to increase knitwear export to 15.1billion USD. Research & Methodology: Based on the survey of the Craft Yarn Council(CYC), a commission has setup and researches has been carried on which states that currently the advancements are going on, not only in terms of industry but also in handmade works. Enthusiasts from all age groups are more involved in knitting and crocheting as a part of their craft activities. The survey throws light on 3,100 crocheters and knitters from worldwide and their daily activities, the summery of that report is as follows: Based on their age group, they are distributed as: Age group Percentage 18 to 34 years 15% 35 to 44 years 13%
  • 28. 45 to 54 years 23% 55 to 64 years 32% Over 65 years 17% Among these crocheters and knitters, 48% are crocheters; 32% are knitters and 20% of them did both. When analyzed on what they make, it showed attractive results. They made scarves, hats, and other small level of hand products. Profile of a normal Knitting enthusiast: • Spending= $801 (average) • Time spent= 10hrs/week • Knitting Projects completed= 24 in an average • Expertise in knitting= 40% expert; 57% intermediate Favorable Factors for Knitting: The role of knitwear within textile sector shows an increasing pace, as being preferred comparatively over woven garments due to their virtues of comfort, stretch ability, easy care, and the pattern of being built within the knitted fabric structure. The main reason for this is the capital investment required is comparatively less when related with other fabric units, even the time taken for this is less.
  • 29. • Modern knitting machines particularly warp knitting machines can produce various type of technical textiles (medical textiles, automobile textiles, geotextiles, etc.) • Computer aided designing and manufacturing in knitting have made it possible to manufacture any desired structure within a short time at reasonable price. Conclusion: Emerging from the few past years, the knitwear industry has attained magnificent growth. Starting from the scarp, it attained stardom within, a minimal time. When analyzing the reasons and trade analytics the main qualities of knitting that triggered its immediate growth are the following requirements of knitting: • Labor less organized. • Floor space: Compared to auto loom for the same production 1. Warp knitting 1/10th 2. Weft knitting 1/8th The power consumption required for knitting mills are very much less when compared with other looms. In case of thinking of the possibilities of starting up an industry, knitting industry can always be a very good choice.
