Military Transport Operations
Military Transport Operations
Introduction
The military is a very important part of the nation for it helps in protecting the borders of the country and its people on air, water, and land. To facilitate the operations of the military transportation is needed to help move the military people and their equipment from one point to another, the main transportation mode is through aircrafts. The military uses various aircrafts, but the assignment will talk about the C-130, C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster with the primary focus being the C-130 aircraft.
Top 3 aircraft
The top three aircrafts that my paper will examine are the C-130, C-5 Galaxy, and C-17 Globemaster. The C-130 aircrafts are used for various missions such as aeromedical missions, airlift support, spray missions and weather reconnaissance among other missions (Bowman, 2017). The C-5 galaxy is mostly known for its ability to carry more cargo when compared to other aircraft and is very reliable and efficient. The C-17 Globemaster is a big cargo aircraft that was developed in the 1800s which serves as the United States Air force’s strategic aircraft to help in the transportation of troops and equipment. The C-17 Globemaster can carry so much cargo at one time, and in terms of space, the aircraft has been designed to carry 134 soldiers together with their equipment (Bowman, 2017).
The aircraft selected
The primary aircraft selected is the C-130 aircraft which has various features, and its primary function is the tactical airlift mission. The aircraft is capable of operating in the dirt and rough strips and hence is the most suitable for airdropping troops and equipment, although not a large capacity carrier, and that limits the load it can carry at a given time. The aircraft has a length of 29.3 inches, and the aircraft has a maximum takeoff weight of 155,000 pounds but can carry up to 175,000 pounds during the war (Jones et al., 2017). It is also used for medical evacuations where it is able to carry 75 patients plus two medical staff. The majority of the C-130 in the United States have been assigned to the US air force, but the navy, Marine Corps and the Coast Guard also operate sizeable C-130 aircraft (Jones et al., 2017).
Advantages
The C-130 has various advantages and one of them is that it has a versatile airframe which makes it suitable for performing other functions such as weather reconnaissance and aerial firefighting. The plane can also travel for 7,000 miles without refueling and has a wide capacity to help in moving troops and equipment. The aircraft is smaller and hence is able to land in many different places. The aircraft is smaller and hence is able to land in many different places; it also able to land on shorter runways when compared to other aircraft because of its size. The aircraft is also very safe and highly reliable when it comes to military operations.

Disadvantages
The C-130, however, also has a few disadvantages, and one of
the disadvantages is that due to its size, it is not able to carry
the huge load, and that means it is not able to move around
large troops together with their equipment and weapons.
Sometimes during war, there is a need to move around large
troops and equipment to help in protecting the nation and its
borders, and this is something that cannot be achieved with the
aircraft because of the size of the aircraft. Another disadvantage
of the aircraft is that as it ages, it becomes quite a challenge to
get repairs and spare parts for the aircraft.
Operational concerns or issues
The C-130 has a few operational issues and concerns, and one
of them is that it is only useful in night assaults, and this is
because the aircraft has poor maneuverability, and it also has
limited orientations relative to the target in case of any attacks
(Heydari et al., 2019). This makes it less effective during wars
when compared to other aircraft. The operations are subject to
some guidelines and rules, and hence as the years go by, the
change in the laws and guidelines impacts the ability of the
aircraft to operate in some parts of the world. As the C-130 fleet
ages, there has been a need for modernization, and hence the
congress is faced with the challenge of whether to go ahead
with the modernization efforts, and this is because it has to
conduct a cost-benefit analysis to ensure that the modernization
of aging components meets current requirements for the military
transportations (Heydari et al., 2019).
Maintenance concerns or issues
The costs of maintaining a C-130 on-air are around $7000 per
hour, and it requires constant maintenance and repairs failure to
which is likely to become ineffective in performing its
functions. Another maintenance concern is that the availability
of the spare parts for the aircraft is also affected, and this
means that with time it will almost be impossible to find the
right quality of spares for this particular aircraft (McGarry,
4. 2017).
Conclusion
Transportation in the military operations during the times
of war and other times is facilitated using various aircrafts. The
C-130 is a small aircraft that is used in the transportation of
troops and moving patients from one place to another. The size
of the aircraft also makes it ideal for other functions such as
aerial firefighting.
