Villages play an integral part in forming a
society. They are like the ancestors of
cities.
We may modernize ourselves and our
surrounding area as much as we want but we
cannot ignore the fact that villages are the
roots of our life, culture, our way of living
and what not. Today, we are going to study
about a village which is rich in culture. We
can still sense of their tradition just by
going there. Culture and the essence of
living is in the air. The name of that village
is.......

Kalpa is a town with a history of ancient
temples. The Sutlej River below hurtles through
deep gorges, the winding mountain road is
bordered by chilgoza forests. The serenity of
this sleepy hamlet was not often visited by
foreigners until recently, but there are still
relatively few visitors.
Shyam Saran Negi, born on 1 July 1917 in
Kalpa, Himachal Pradesh, is a retired
schoolteacher who cast the first vote in the
1951 general election in India— the nation's
first election since the end of the British Rule in
1947.

Corporation) have regular bus service for
Kalpa from Shimla.
Few Intra City Bus Routes for Kalpa :
1. Delhi -> Shimla -> Rampur -> Kalpa
2. Delhi -> Manali -> Kaza -> Kalpa
10. TRANSPORTATION:
NH-505A whose north end is Powari and south end is Kalpa and it is shortest highway
with length of 20km only.
The following ways to reach Kalpa from Shimla:
• By private transport: From Delhi
Delhi – Panipat – Ambala – Zirakpur – Kalka – Kandaghat – Shimla – Narkanda –
Rampur – Tapri – Reckong Peo – Kalpa.
• By bus:
From Delhi there is a regular bus service from 5:00PM to 10:30PM at gap of every 1 hour.
There are total 5 buses on regular basis which arrives from delhi and drop at Shimla after
travelling of 7-9 hours.
• By Taxi:
From Shimla you can also book a taxi to cover the distance of 277km to
reach Kalpa.
#Note- during the monsoon period i.e. from July to September, roads
may be blocked due to snowslide.
11. DRINKING WATER:
As Kalpa is located at the top of King Kamal Negi Sutlej river valley,
the main source of water is the melted ice. As the ice water is
directly coming from through the stones, it naturally gets purified
and become suitable for drinking.
ELECTRICITY SUPPLY:
In the present time the electricity supply in Kalpa is for 14-16 hours
per day but accourding to the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity
Board Limited(HPSEBL) At the end of 2021 or start of 2022
electricity will be provided 24hours in whole Kinnaur district.
SOLID WASTE COLLECTION SYSTEM:
There is no proper solid waste collection in Kalpa village.

Due to high alt. Kalpa has long winter from
October to May. Temperature reaches to –
15 degree to –20 degree with 5-7 feet of
snow.

Kalpa is at 31.53°N
78.25°E. The Mean Sea
Level is about 2,960
metres (9,711 ft).
It is located at the base
of Kinnaur Kailash snow-
capped ranges.
The Shivling peaks rise
upto 20,000 ft (6000 m).
Kalpa is among apple
orchards, pine-nut forests
and the stately deodhars.
The Sutlej river below
hurtles through deep
gorges, the winding
mountain road is
bordered by Chilgoza
Forests.

As Kalpa is located on the hill, its natural drainage is
its slope itself, which is y=-0.0038x+7.2708

VEGETATION
The main cash crops of Kalpa
Village are Apples.
The soil of Kalpa Village
is ideal for apples which in
turn give high quality yield.
Other than apples you may
find Pine-nut Forests,
Deodhars, Chilgoza Forests
etc.
18. SOIL CONDITION:
Type-3 soil is found in Kalpa village. Type 3 soil is the least
stable type of soil.
Type 3 includes granular soils in which particles don't
stick together and cohesive soils with a low unconfined
compressive strength; 0.5 tons per square foot or less.
Examples of Type 3 soil include gravel, and sand.
The SBC of Type-3 soil is 3000 pounds per square foot.

20. LANGUAGE: Hindi, English(as official) Sanskrit, Hindi and Kinnauri(as
local language).
PEOPLE BELIEFS: The local Kinnauri follow a syncretism of Hinduism
and Buddhism, and many temples in Kalpa are dedicated to both Hindu
and Buddhist gods and goddesses.
21. VILLAGE CELEBRATION: baisakhi or beesh festival is
celebrated in the month of april. The villagers prepare food like
poltu, halwa and keyshid on this special occasion. The image of the
goddess is brought out of the temple with respect and a fair is
held in the santang. It is an occasion to get together and to dance
and drink.
URBANIZATION: The urbanization in Kalpa village is less than
5%.
DRESSING STYLE: The famous dressing style for women in
kinnaur is kinnauri dress.

is no particular hairstyle is there.

28. ROOF STYLE: Slanted roof is used in probably every house because
during
snowfall, due to slanted roofs the ice easily fell down from the roof.
FOUNDATION: 2 Benching or Stepped Foundation.
This type of foundation is provided on hilly places or in those situations
where the ground is sloppy. In this foundations the excavation trenches
are made in the form of steps.
PLAYGROUND: There is a large playground named Dev Raj Negi
playground which was named after Lt. Dev Raj Negi.
Timings of sawing seeds: During the time of early springs, Apple seeds
are sawn. And in September and November pine seeds are sawn.
Timings of harvesting: Apple- late may & Pine nuts- late summer.

Two types of temple architecture is followed in Kalpa village:
1. Buddhist style which includes monasteries (viharas),
places to venerate relics ( stupas ), and shrines or prayer halls
(chaityas or chaitya grihas).
2. Hindu style which includes Shikhar style of architecture.
