The Generations
of
electronic computer
We will Discuss
 Introduction
 First Generation Computers
 Second Generation Computers
 Third Generation Computers
 Fourth Generation Computers
 Fifth Generation Computers
Definition of Computer
 Computer is an advance electronic device
that manipulate information/data. It has the
ability to retrieve and process data.
 It can perform Arithmetic and Logical
calculation.
1st Generation Of
Computer
 It starts from 1942-1956.
 They used Vacuum Tubes as for circuitry and
for memory.
 They were very expensive.
 They consumed alot of electricity.
 They were bigger in size, as they occupied a room
space
 UNIVAC and ENIAC computers are examples of first-
generation computing
1st Generation Computer
Limitation Of 1stGeneration Computer
 They were large in size.
 They consumed large amount of electricity.
 Operating of computers were costly.
 It’s maintenance was costly.
 It was not portable.
 They generate a lot of heat.
2nd Generation
Of Computers
2ndGneration Of Computer
 The 2nd Generation of computers
starts with the development of
transistor, It was continued from 1956-
64.
 They were smaller, faster and cheaper
than 1st generation computers.
 They consumed less electricity due to
use of transistor.
 They generate less heat.
Limitation of 2nd Generation Computer
 They were also required cooling system.
 They were used for specific purpose.
 They were also very large in size.
3rd Generation
Of
Computer
3rd Generation Computer
 The third Generations starts with
development of IC in 1964 and continued
till 1972.
 They were faster than 1st and 2nd
generation computer.
 They were smaller, cheaper and reliable
than 1st and 2nd generation computers.
 They consumed less electricity.
Limitation of 3rdGeneration Computer
 Due to use of IC highly sophisticated
technology was required.
 Still required Cooling system.
 It was cheaper but not for home use.
4th Generation
Of
Computer
4th Generation Of Computer
 This generation starts from1972 to
onward.
 4th Generation of computer relied on
microprocessor which contains thousands
of circuits in it.
 They are smaller, portable, reliable and
cheaper.
 The storage capacity was very much
increased.
 This generation computers were very user
user friendly.
 The development of microprocessor
revolutionized electronic gadgetry.
 Smart devices use micro-controllers
and are called dedicated computers.
5th Generation
Of
Computer
5th Generation Of Computer
 The fifth generation computers
are still undergoing development.
 They will have artificial
intelligence
 They will be able to recognize
image, objects and weather
forecasting
 They will be able to accept
instructions in voice messages,
normal conversational languages
for processing.
 Fifth generation computer aims
to be able to solve highly
complex problem including
decision making, logical
reasoning
