2. Skyline: this gives information as
to what the main topic of the issue
is about. It is placed at the top
which makes it easily visible to the
reader.
The Masthead uses recognisable
typography so that it stands out to
the other magazines sold in the
similar category.
The Main Image is big enough to make a
clear impact on the news stand. For this
particular magazine the image of Kendrick
Lamar takes up most of the cover which
would allow his fans to spot him easily
and then proceed to purchase the
magazine. Kendrick has also engaged in
eye contact with the potential buyer which
will establish a relationship between the
buyer and the artist which encourages
them to buy the magazine.
Cover Lines are used to
show the reader what else
will be in the magazine, if
the reader is not that
interested about Kendrick
Lamar this allows them to
know that there is also
information about Ionic cars
and Fashion ect.
Mise-en-sence: The magazine has featured Kendrick Lamar
in a full white suit with a bright white background this is
used to back up the fact that they feel Kendrick Lamar is the
“New God MC” the use of a white suit and bright white
lighting links to the stereotypical views about god
(wearing white robes and shining bright and white)
The Main Cover
Lines are used
to clearly show
to the reader
who the
magazine is
focused on
which draws
the attention of
Kendrick's
demographic.
This is a larger
text which
allows the
reader to
clearly see.
A Barcode is always used so
that the magazine can be
sold. It also includes the price.
FRONT COVER
3. The masthead is a large letter V which stands for the title of the magazine, VIBE.
It is always featured on a vibe magazine and is positioned on the top half of the
contents page which keeps the look of the magazine consistent and makes it look
professional. This also acts as a kind of logo for the magazine as the V is highly
recognisable for the company VIBE. The magazine use a monochromatic colour
scheme las in the one the v is grey which matches with the background and the
black and white image of the rapper Kanye west. The colour scheme gives the
magazine a elegant/classy look and makes the V stand out.
The main image of the contents page is Kanye west with a arm coming over his
shoulder holding a heart shaped object (the only bright object on the page which
allows this to stand out. This may infer that a woman is trying to win over his
heart. The image dominates the page and draws the attention to the world
famous rapper. Kanye west is looking directly at the audience with a moody look
on his face which shows how serious he is about the rap game and that his music
should be taken seriously as he is not making music just for fun. Even though he
is a rapper he is dressed smart which shows a link to the elegant/classy theme of
the magazine.
The word contents is in a large bold black font which makes it stand out. The
word is broken into 3 line and this is how it is mostly displayed on a vibe
magazine which shows consistency and professionalism.
The sub headings are displayed as bold black writing but not as large as the
word contents, the large black writing clearly attracts the readers attention and
then gives them information on areas in the magazine of which they’ll be
interested.
In the bottom right of the page there are a few lines that tell the reader the artists
name, when and where the photo was taken and who took it. This give the reader
more information if they want it.CONTENTS
4. MISE-EN-SCENE CREATED BY
THE SMOKE: The smirk on Wiz
Kalifa’s face contributes to a
relaxed image. The main factor
is that he is seen to be
weed which is a well know
relaxant drug with adds to the
relaxed feel of the magazine,
the smoke has been shot to
look very heavy and
overpowering and takes over
nearly half his face. This
overpowering presence can be
seen as a way to infer that the
article will be about wiz, his
weed and his chilled out
character.
SUB-HEADING: “how high” is a play on two
meanings: high as in the effects of the drug
and high as in the his achievement and
success in the music industry.
TITLE: The tile of the
article are the initials of
the rapper (Wiz Kalifa)
by joining the two initials
together it has made a
clear, bright and bold
title that is short and
snappy.
2 SIMPLE COLUMS: only
a third of the double
page spread is writing
which suggests that the
readers of vibe do not
like to read heavy based
texts but enjoy a bit of
light reading with mostly
illustration.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
MAIN IMAGE: the image is of one of the most recent leading rappers in the world “Wiz Kalifa” whom is a young
Caribbean man. This huge image allows readers to recognise him instantly and allows them to relate him to the
article as he is right next to it. The article discusses his growing success and his regular use of the drug weed which
has lead to trouble with the authorities 3 times.
