● Came to be in 2000 in response to concern about Internet access to obscene
or harmful information

4. How Will We Implement: CIPA
Not only do we want to receive the E-rate discount for applying appropriate
filters to school computers, but most importantly we want to protect students.
We will maintain appropriate filters and website blocks to keep students from
being able to access inappropriate content.
If, for some reason, these filters or blocks are weakened, disciplinary action will
be take.
The media specialist will teach proper website searching skills and which
websites are appropriate for student usage.
5. Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA)
IDEA was originally enacted by Congress in 1975 and has undergone many
update and changes since then to ensure that it protects all students.
IDEA is the law that ensures children with disabilities have access to a quality,
free education and that the education is accommodated to their appropriate
needs.
7. How Will We Implement: IDEA
To accommodate all students with or without disabilities, our media center will
provide various mediums, such as audiobooks, eReaders, and large print
text, through which students can read books, as well as providing books to
meet many different reading and ability levels.
The media center will assist with recording test with audio to assist students
who need an assignment read. The media center has recorders and a quiet
room for recording.
The layout of the media center will contain lower shelves so all students can
access the novels, as well as accommodations for wheelchairs.
Some books will also be available in Braille.
8. The PATRIOT Act
The PATRIOT Act allows law enforcement more rights and more tools to detect
potential terrorists and threats. Law enforcement agencies can track online usage
of suspected terrorists and they do not have to notify the person that they are
tracking them.
10. How Will We Implement: The
Patriot Act
● The media specialist will inform students about digital footprints.
○ Students need to be aware of the fact that anything they post leaves a “footprint” that can be
retraced by anyone, including teachers, a boss, and the government.
○ Online postings often say more about someone than anything else.
● The media specialist will also inform students of what the Patriot Act consist
of and how this will affect their computer accessing abilities.
● The media specialist will also inform students about responsible posting
online and social media.
