5. A.R Barton is a modern English writer who lives in
Zurich. In the present story ‘Going Places’ Barton
emphasizes that fantasy and imagination end up in
being illusions and empty mirages.
6. ⚫The story ‘Going Places ‘ describes the aspirations
and dreams of the youth and the pain of unfulfilled
promises and shattered dreams. It deals with the
adolescent fantasy and hero –worship.
7. ⚫The theme of the story is an adolescent school girl
Sophie. She is an incurable day-dreamer and
escapist. She dreams of having the boutique,
becoming an actress and fashion designer. She
considers the young Irish footballer , Danny Casey
as her hero. She knows she can’t get him. It makes
her sad. All the dreams and disappointments of
Sophie are the creations of her own mind.

9. ⚫ The story revolves around Sophie who is a teenager, about to
finish her school, she dreams big to achieve a lot in life. She
belongs to a middle class family where father is a textbook
example of a working class. Her elder brother Geoff is
already working and is almost grown-up in the eyes of
Sophie.
⚫ Sophie has high hopes about her career. She is not
interested in joining a biscuit factory and dreams of opening
her own boutique. She thinks herself to be very
sophisticated and original and suitable to be either an actor
or work as manager. Jansie, her friend, tries to make her
realise her practical position. The only person in whom
Sophie seems to have full faith and hope is her brother
Geoff. He passed out school three years back and is working
as a mechanic . Through Geoff speaks less and most of the
time is busy in his own thoughts, Sophie shares everything
with him.
10. ⚫ One day Sophie tells her brother Geoff that she has met
Danny Casey, an Irish sports star. Her father is angry with
her and calls it her wild dreams. He warns her that one day
she would get into trouble for all this. The entire family is a
fan of Danny Casey and they all go to watch football match in
which Danny Casey scores the final goal.
⚫ Sophie tells Geoff that she is going for a date with Danny
Casey. Though Geoff doesn’t believe her, he doesn’t stop
her. He tells this to Frank who is Jansie’s brother and Jansie
comes to Sophie to get the details. But Sophie hides it from
her. Sophie goes to the wharf to meet Danny Casey in the
evening. She keeps on waiting for him but Danny doesn’t
come. She returns home disappointed. It’s so wonderful for
her to live in the world of fantasy. The story describes the
psychology of a teenager who loves to live in a world of
make-believe.
11. ⚫Sophie and Jansie were classmates and friends.
⚫Sophie was a day –Dreamer. She used to dream of
opening a boutique, becoming an actress or a fashion
designer.
⚫Jansie was quite practical. She knew that they
belonged to poor families and all big plans need
money.
⚫ Jansie advised Sophie to be sensible. She knew that
both of them were ea earmarked for the biscuit
factory after they passed out from school.
12. ⚫Geoff, Sophie’s brother, was an apprentice
mechanic.
⚫Sophie wished Geoff would allow her to share his
experiences and thoughts with him.
⚫Sophie could open her heart only to Geoff.
⚫She told how she met Danny Casey, the wonder-
boy of football. He himself invited her.
⚫Geoff told his father about Sophie’s meeting with
Danny Casey.
⚫Sophie ‘s father never believed her, he only looked
at her with disdain.

⚫Sophie was upset when she knew that Jansie also
knew the story of her meeting with Casey.
⚫On Saturday Sophie’s family went to watch a
football match. United won two –nil. Casey drove in
the second goal.
⚫It was the first and only time when Sophie saw
Danny Casey in person and in action.
⚫After dark she walked by the canal. She was lost in
the thoughts of Danny Casey. She imagined him
coming and talking to her.

wouldn’t come. She was sad and disappointed.
