• Urinary catheters are hallow ,flexible tubes to
collect urine from bladder . During catherization a
catheter is introduce into the urinary bladder
through urethra using aseptic technique for
emptying the bladder.
• Urinary catheters come in many sizes and
types.They are tubular instruments that are made
of rubber ,plastics, metals.
5. TYPES
1.Indwelling catheter
This catheter is also called foley’s catheter or self –
retaining catheters.A foley’s catheter is retained by
means of a ballon at the tip that is inflated with sterile
water .This type of catheter collects urine by attaching
to a drainage bag and useful for short and long
periods of times.

7. 2.EXTERNAL CATHETER
•It is also know as condom
catheter .A condom catheter
is a catheter placed outside
the body.It is typically
necessary for men who don’t
have serious urinary retention
problems but have serious
functional or mental
disabilities ,such as dementia.
8. 3.INTERMITTENT CATHETER
It is also called non self
retaining catheter.An
intermittent catheter is a
flexible catheter used for
short term drainage of urine
.These are temporarily
inserted into bladder and
removed once the bladder is
empty. Robinson catheter is
