2. Who is Ted Codd ?
•Edgar Frank "Ted" Codd was an English computer
scientist who, while working for IBM, invented
the relational model for database management,
the theoretical basis for relational databases and
relational database management systems

3. Codd’s Childhood
Edgar Frank Codd was born in Fortuneswell.
 After attending Poole Grammar School, he studied mathematics and chemistry at Exeter
College, Oxford.

4. Achievements
•He was presented with the Turning Award
on Nov-9-1981
For his fundamental and continuing
contribution to the theory and Practice
RDBMS

1. His Father was a leather manufacturer and His Mother was a School teacher.
2. He was Born in 1923 southEast England.
3. Went on full scholarship to Exeter college, Oxford, initially studying chemistry
4. He Joined the Royal Air Force and served in world war 2 after the war he Earned B.A and
M.A in Mathematics from oxford.

8. Codd’s motivation in Proposing
the Relational Model
 There were Two motivations behind why codd came up with the
relational model:
1) The dependence of a programmer or application developer on the
way the data is modelled, stored and navigated
2) Loss of programmer productivity due to effort spent on “ manual
Optimization “
