1. History of Bangladesh Nationalist Party
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (Bengali:Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Dal), commonly referred to as the
BNP, is the mainstream center-right political party in Bangladesh. It is currently the largest opposition
party in the Parliament of Bangladesh. The entry of late President Ziaur Rahman in Bangladeshi political
stage, was sudden. But it was a must to happen. In order to fill the gap of presence of a righteous and
honest leader, Ziaur Rahman entered into Bangladeshi politics as a response to the demand posed by
the time and the nation. Ziaur Rahman did not enter into politics from the back door or by any midnight
intriguing drama; he entered the politics as all the nation, civilians, armed forces and literally every
single living people wanted him to take the charge of political fate of Bangladesh on a shiny morning,
November 07, 1975. He became a leader by the people and for the people; and it is none but only the
common mass people of Bangladesh - who made him, a leader.
The time when Ziaur Rahman became the leader by the people, there was not a single political party in
Bangladesh. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by forming a single party 'Bakshal' had banned all other political
activities and parties from Bangladesh and wanted only to run 'one party ruling system' in country.
Democratic rights of the people of the country and the democratic practices were forced to put into
exile. The legal system, courts and newspaper, all were controlled. Each and every human rights were
violated at gross. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, self promoted himself from prime minister to president and
became only exerciser of godly power and possessions. He extended his government's tenure to the
power for three years without any vote or public referendum. Even after his long and historical records
of being active organizer and leader of so many movements for the democracy and independence of the
country; Sheikh Mujibur Rahman eventually proved himself only to be the father of all 'autocratic
dictatorship' by establishing one party ruling system - Bakshal.
All these activities were against the spirit of our liberation war. The people of the newly independent
and liberated country were greatly hurt and shocked to find themselves deprived of their rights. Using
this situation to their benefits, an anti-sheikh mujib group lead by Kh. Mushtaq - a close associate of
sheikh Mujib and with the help of some misguided army group captured the power by a bloody coup.
A great revolutionary change took place by the joint efforts of army and civilian against these intrigues,
on 7TH November 1975. This change was for the seek of the independence and liberty of the country,
for multi party democratic system, for human rights, for democracy, for politics and for development
and for production. That change was against military ruling and for democratic ruling. Ziaur Rahman,
declarer of our liberation war, was at the leading position of this change movement. To make this
change possible, Ziaur Rahman allowed politics in Bangladesh, introduced democratic practices in
Bangladesh and widened the opportunity to form political parties in Bangladesh. He restored human
rights, restored people's right to speech and liberated the newspapers, freed the legal system in the
country. To foster the changes to more meaningful one, Ziaur Rahman formed a party, Bangladesh
2. Nationalist Party (BNP).
Muslim League was leading the movement to found a country, Pakistan. Later they could not revive up
their politics to meet the demand of the time. Awami League was the pioneer in our movement for
independence and liberation war of Bangladesh. But later they failed to play positive roles as a political
party. BNP was born, on the background of awami failure, as a political party to contribute in the
national politics from a independent and sovereign country's perspective. This party has created a new
stream in the politics of Bangladesh with long history of struggle, peace and prosperity for last 31 years.
The party is seasoned with experiences. Numerous martyr strengthened our oaths. We are walking with
the flag of national unity raised above all against all the clashes, chaos and divisions. We created,
developed, nurtured a true nationalism irrespective of religion, class, society, ethnic group. colors,
landscape and professions. With our respect for religion kept ever flowing, we shall protect and protest
all extreme racism. We will always stick to our national interest and prestige. We are not leftist nor
rightist. Who stays on our left is leftist, who stays on the right is rightist. Our position is on the left of the
rightist and on the right of the leftist. Our position is at the center and we are at the heart of
Bangladeshi politics. Bangladesh Nationalist Party is the main stream of Bangladeshi politics. BNP is the
national political organization of Bangladesh.
Council 2009
The fifth national council of BNP took off Tuesday morning after a long hiatus of 16 years with party
chief Khaleda Zia hoisting the national flag at the conference venue in the capital. She arrived at the
Bangabandhu International Conference Centre at around 10:30am. A four-member delegation of the
ruling Awami League, the arch-rival of BNP, led by Ashim Kumar Ukil is attending the inaugural session.
As many as 2,512 councillors, 12,000 delegates from across the country and 3,000 local and foreign
guests are attending the council. Officials and organisers said a three-tier security has been put in place
to guard against any violence at the moot. Party founder late president Ziaur Rahman convened the first
council in 1978. Later three BNP councils were held in 1983, 1988 and 1993.
The council is being held to amend the party's constitution as required under the Representation of
People Order (2nd amendment). BNP will have to submit its amended constitution to the Election
Commission by January 24, 2010. Most political parties, including the ruling Awami League, have already
submitted their amended party constitutions, but six parties—including BNP—are yet to submit their
constitutions. The programmes of the council include the opening session, a closed-door council session
and cultural function. Only the party councillors will be allowed to attend the closed-door council
session.
A pre-recorded statement of BNP senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman, now in London, will be
put on a big screen at the council. Tarique went to London, with his wife and children, for medical
treatment in September 2007, after being granted bail in a number of cases.
3. Khaleda Zia was re-elected unopposed the chairperson of BNP as she was the only candidate for the top
post. There was no other contender against Khaleda, who currently holds the chairmanship of the party.
Khaleda was re-elected chairperson of BNP in the party council held in September 1993. She took over
the position of party chairperson in 1983 from the then BNP chairman late Abdus Sattar, when the post
was renamed 'chairperson'.
The party will propose to add to its constitution the provision of a number of new posts of senior
secretary general, deputy treasurer and indigenous people affairs secretary and one more joint
secretary. BNP vice president Tariqul Islam, who is also the convenor of the constitution reform
committee, said on Monday they have received some 40 reform proposals from across the country. In
addition, there are suggestions for expansion of all committees from grassroots union level to central
level with a provision for every committee to have at least 30 percent women, he also said. The highest
policy-making forum of the party, the national standing committee, has approved all the proposals after
scrutiny. But the proposals will get the final endorsement at the national council, Islam said.

19-member BNP standing committee announced

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia announced 19-member standing committee
inducting 12 new faces in and dropping two from the highest decision-making body of the party. Names
of eight joint secretaries general, including a senior joint secretary general, was also declared after five
days of the party's national council that had made Khaleda its chairperson for the third consecutive
term. Khaleda also approved a decision to let incumbent secretary general Advocate Khandker Delwar
Hossain continue his responsibilities until the election of a new secretary general, a party statement
said.
As it was expected, reformist leaders were not given any berth in the standing committee as well as in
the panel of eight-member joint secretaries general.
Khaleda made the announcement of the standing committee and names of the joint secretaries general
in line with the power entrusted to her by the 5th national council of the party.
The standing committee members and the joint secretaries general will hold the office for a three-year
term, the statement said.

Matin Chowdhury and Advocate Khondker Mahbub Uddin Khan are the two leaders dropped out of the
all-powerful committee.
Khaleda Zia made Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the new senior joint secretary general in place of the
just promoted Tarique Rahman. Tarique, also the eldest son of Khaleda Zia, has been made the vice-

The decision to let Khandaker Delwar continue as the secretary general is seen as the primary victory of
Delwar camp as a large faction in the party opposed his reelection to the post. But with his induction
into to the standing committee, chances for Khandker Delwar to retain the post apparently faded out.
BNP names full-fledged committee

The much-awaited full-pledged 386-member central national executive committee of the Bangladesh
Nationalist Party was officially announced Friday night.
The BNP senior joint secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, announced the full-pledged
national executive committee and the 32-member BNP chairperson’s advisory council at a press
conference at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office at 8:50pm.

Earlier, on December 13, the names of a 19-member national standing committee, the party’s highest
policymaking body, and eight joint secretaries general, including one senior joint secretary general of
the national executive committee were announced with approval of the incumbent secretary general as
secretary general until the new secretary general is elected.
On December 8, during the fifth national council of the BNP, the party councillors from across the
country unanimously elected Tarique Rahman, now in the UK for treatment, as its senior vice-chairman.
The councillors also empowered Khaleda Zia who was reelected unopposed as party chairperson on
December 4 to elect the members of standing committee, national executive committee and other
bodies.
‘After 23 days of consultation with all concerned, the BNP chairperson accomplished her assigned
responsibility to elect the full-fledged national executive committee and the advisory council body of the
BNP chairperson,’ said a senior party leader.
‘New faces, particularly those who were with the party at its bad and crucial time during the last
military-backed caretaker government as well as former JCD leaders have been incorporated in the new
committee for a three-year term. Leaders known as reformists were also accommodated in the
executive committee,’ the BNP leader said.
