2. 1.0 INTRODUCTION TO GREEN CAMPUS
Green Campus is a place where
environmentally responsible practice and
education go hand in hand and where
environmentally responsible tenets are borne
out by example and to promote environment
stewardship to their students. This paper
entitled “Design of My College as a Green
Campus” describes the Components of green
campus and presents a Draft Design of JNTUK
Narasaraopet, a newly established Constituent
Engineering College of Jawaharlal Nehru
Technological University, Kakinada.
3. GREEN-
THE MEANING OF THE TERM ‘GREEN’ IS “CONCERNED FOR SUPPORTING
PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND NOT HARMFUL TO ENVIRONMENT”.
4. 2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW
Some of the Green Universities that
successfully implemented Green Practices are:
University of Colorado, University of
Washington, Middlebury College, University of
Vermont, College of the Atlantic, Evergreen
state College, University of California, Oberlin
College, Harvard University of New Hampshire
and New York University. Some of the best
practices adopted in renowned Green
Universities are studied so that the same are
implemented in our college.
6. 3.0 COMPONENTS OF GREEN BUILDINGS
a) Green and solar roofs- Terrace farming and solar roofing
b) LED, CFC and solar bulbs- less energy, less heat
c) Green Construction using: Fly ash that displaces 30% cement
and Local materials-that reduce transportation cost & labor
d) Low flow plumbing fixtures-uses less water for flush
e) Green Urinals- For flushing air is used, No water is used for
flushing.
e) Bamboo flooring-renewable, strong, stable.
f) Plastic lumber-made from recycled plastic, resists oil, salt and
chemicals
g) Eco surfaces-from recycled tyres, weather and slip resistant
h) Low VOC paints-limits any odor, harmful &irritating emissions
i) Sealtech block-non porous, stronger than concrete, 10% lighter,
strong
j) Maze nails-from recycled steel
8. 1. Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) Plant
2. Rain water harvesting pits at Lowest Contours at 200 m spacing
3. Green belt
4. Over head tank
5. Botanical Garden
6. Rubberized play courts using waste materials like Plastics and Construction waste
from CRDA, Amaravati.
7. Sports complex with Indoor Stadium
8. Boys hostel with 33% of Terrace area with Solar Panels
9. Girls hostel with terrace farming
10. Canteen with biogas plant and Vermin Composting
11. Administrative block with digital library
12-16. CE, ME, EEE, ECE, CSE departments
9. 75% OF APPCB [ANDHRA PRADESH POLLUTION
CONTROL BOARD] IS COVERED WITH SOLAR
PANELS.
11. 4.0 PROS OF GREEN CAMPUS
Economic benefits
Increase in productivity of occupants
Increases potential to gain knowledge
Benefits both institution and students
Reduces maintenance costs
20% profit with 2% investment
Carbon neutral environment
Institution become ethical and value based
Recognition for the organization improving the
image and helpful in accreditation.
12. 5.0 IDEAS OF GREEN CAMPUS
1. Go digital
2. Avoid use and throw bottles
3. Save power [“Unit Power Saved = 2 Units Power
Produced]
4. Carpool and Mass Transportation like Buses for faculty
and Students. Making the Campus 100% Residential in a
Professional college also reduces emissions drastically.
People should be discouraged to travel unnecessarily and
daily from Hostels and homes to work place.]
5. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Buy second hand, buy local and
resell.
6. Reading online newspaper
7. Make Campus 100% Cashless and Paperless. Having cash
to be treated as possessing ‘Narcotics’. JNTUK has already
done a significant work in this regard. It has conducted
several Awareness programs for cashless transaction in
public and implementing also. JNTUK University gave a
Notice in this regard that from 01 January 2017, all
13. 8. Embrace a minimalist lifestyle
9. Stop using disposable items
10. Selected species of plants like night queen to
purify air and for aroma
11. Power down when not in use
12. Decrease meat consumption as it harms life
13. Reduce aerosol sprays. Classrooms to be
oriented such that
14. Ban non recyclable plastics
15. Stop using Air conditioners which produce
CFC’s
16. Solar panels to produce energy
17. Pedal power production in GYMs
18. Using tracks instead of thread mills
19. GREEN BELTS
14. 6.0 CONCLUSION
We should practice what we preach. As
institutions of higher learning the seeds of
change that are sown on your campus will grow
and ultimately disperse far afield. The green
campus concept offers the institution the
opportunity to take the lead in rethinking its
environmental culture and developing new
paradigms for solving problems that are local,
national and global in nature. As UCEN was
established only in June 2016 and is in her
infancy, the suggestions for sustainable
development can be implemented very easily
and economically.
