3. The process of digestion takes place in a
long tube called the GASTROINTESTINAL
tract also called the digestive tract.
Involves breaking down of food into smaller
particles into simpler substances with the
action of enzymes or chemicals.
Absorption proceeds when the cells take in
digested food for maintenance and growth.
8. STOMACH
A valve opens at the bottom releasing
small amount of chyme into small
intestine
9. Diameter of 2.5 centimeters
Where complete digestion takes place
Digest carbohydrates and fats
Completes digestion of proteins
Absorbs digested nutrients
10.
11.
12.
13. As food moves through small intestine, it passes through
thousands of villi (“villus’-singular)
Projecting on the linings of the small intestine that absorbs
digested food.
14. The villi link the Digestive System to the Circulatory
and Lymphatic System.
Most of the nutrients needed by the body are absorbed
through the small intestine.
Only the undigested food materials reach the end of the
small intestine.
At the junction of the small & large intestine is an organ
called “appendix”- do not have known function but when it
gets infected, “appendicitis” occurs and an operation called
“appendectomy” is needed to remove it.
15. Where undigested food materials went through
1.5 meters long & 6 centimeters wide
Absorbs water from the undigested food materials
leaving an almost solid material.
Anaerobic bacteria digest this solid material &
synthesize some B vitamins and vitamin K which
are absorbed by the body.
16. After 18-24 hours, the undigested food called
“feces” goes to the end of the digestive tract called
“rectum”.
The feces is eliminated from the rectum through
the “anus”.
It takes about 24-33 hours for the food to move
through the whole length of the digestive tract.
