This document discusses earthquakes and seismic activity in Delhi, India. It begins by explaining what determines the intensity of earthquakes in a particular area and how seismic activity occurs due to tectonic plate movement. It then provides a table showing the magnitude of earthquakes and their expected effects and frequency. It outlines India's earthquake zones and notes that 59% of India's landmass is prone to earthquakes of varying intensities. The document discusses that Delhi is located in Seismic Zone 4 and is at risk due to its flat terrain and high population density in urban areas. It concludes by outlining the research methods to be used, including reviewing journals, conducting a public survey, and interviewing government officials.
3. HOW IT HAPPENS?
Sudden Tectonic movements
in earth crust
Tectonic plates slides over
one another.
Releasing of shock waves
As there is a movement in
plates there is stress built up
cause of orogeny
4. MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE EFFECTS ESTIMATED NUMBER EACH YEAR
2.5 or less
Usually not felt, but
can be recorded by seismograph.
Millions
2.5 to 5.4
Often felt, but only
causes minor damage.
5,00,000
5.5 to 6.0
Slight damage to
buildings and other structures.
350
6.1 to 6.9
May cause a lot of
damage in very populated areas.
100
7.0 to 7.9
Major earthquake.
Serious damage.
Oct-15
8.0 or greater
Great earthquake. Can
totally destroy communities near the epicenter.
One every year or two
5. EARTHQUAKE ZONES
Zone II (low intensity zone)
Zone III (moderate intensity zone)
Zone IV (severe intensity zone)
Zone V (very severe intensity zone)
Approximately, 11% of the country falls in zone V, ~18%
in zone IV, ~ 30% in zone III and the remaining in zone II.
A total of ~59% of the landmass of India (covering all
states of India) is prone to earthquakes of different
intensities.
6. WHY DELHI?
The terrain of Delhi is flat in
general except for the north-
northeast (NNE)-south-southwest
(SSW) trending ridge.
Delhi under the Sesimic Zone 4
Urbanization in Delhi, with high
density of population.
7. RESEARCH METHOD & REFERENCES
For any research to be informative it is essential to have reliable
information from reliable sources ,So we will be going through
various journals and other books to get background
information.
As a primary source of data we will be collecting information
from the public through a form which has questionnarie.
We collect some important data through a offline survey, we
primarily focus on ground level situations and their loopholes.
We are also planning to interact with few government officials
to know their opinions and suggestions on the current situation.
