About I.A Richards
 He was an English educator, literary critic and
rhetorician whose work contributed to the
foundation of New Criticism.
 His notable works include:
1. The Meaning of Meaning
2. The Principle of Literary Criticism
3. The Practical Criticism
What is Figurative Language?
 According to Richards language constituted of words or ‘figures’ and not
emotions or feelings. His was a scientific approach towards language.
 However, according to Richards the language of poetry is purely
emotive, i.e. it is used in its original state. Therefore, it is essential to avoid
over-literal reading of a text.
 According to Richards, words carry four kinds of meaning, or to be more
precise, the total meaning of a word depends on four factors:
1. Sense
2. Feeling
3. Tone
4. Intention
The aim of this presentation is to understand the fact that the intended tone
of the writer is often completely different from what the readers understand.

Conclusion
 It can be concluded that Richards’ concepts
regarding the analysis of language can be applied
even to our analysis of not just literature but also of
popular media.
 Since language in our times is not just restricted to
literature but also to all these mediums of
communication.
Thank You….
