● About Author
● About “The Sense of an Ending”
● Major Characters
● Various Interpretations
About Author
● Julian Patrick Barnes is
an English Writer
● He won the Man
Booker Prize for this
book in 2011
● Major Works :
● Flaubert’s Parrot [1984]
● England,England [1998]
● Arthur & George [2005]
The Sense of an Ending
● Title is borrowed from a
book of the same name
by Frank Kermode
● Narrated by a retired
man named Tony
Webster
● Recalls how he met
Adrian Finn at school
● His meeting with
Veronica at Bristol
What is Actual end
● Our ending lies in our hands and isn’t affected by other’s
perspectives.
● When you talk about ending at that time you generally come to
any conclusion that whatever is happens in your life or in the
life of yours through others gets diverted to what you call which
is not an end
● Novel divided into two parts. when Tony becomes mature that is
in second part and he looks at life very differently as compared
to what he used to when he was in his college
● The characters who were important is in the first and second part
● With the time all the characters motifs changed. Now the
characters were the same and playing the role in the same way.
Motifs has not changed but their perspectives has changed of the
person who is looking at all the characters around him
Example
● Adrian has affair with Veronica’s mother which he never
thought of. He always thought that Veronica and Adrian has
affair and in the pub he said Terry that Adrian [Son] is
veronica’s son which he not supports to be. He is actually
brother.
● when you look at one character with two different angles your
mindset towards this particular changes differently
● You can not sense what will happen in your life from the
beginning
Assumptions
● In the novel we can find assumptions and
assumption created plot or the characters or
situations
● When assumptions change, story change and your
Mindset change when you come across the reality
or fact
● Is he her brother or son, it is not important but your
perspective towards the character is important and
that is a issue of concern
● Tony writes one letter and said Adrain to meet Veronica’s
Mother because he believes that Veronica is not mentally
stable
● Tony Thinks that because of me he went there and everything
happen
● But, Tony’s suggestion to meet Sarah Ford wasn’t meant for
Adrian to establish a relationship with her. He just suggested
to consult her regarding Veronica.
● so this is Adrian’s mindset. Tony only said him to meet and
talk about Veronica
● So Tony should not be guilty
● You always look at people how you want to look
at them and otherwise You created your own
story and move on
● Should Tony be guilty? No he should not
because he is only the medium of the meeting
point of Sarah and Adrian.
● Tony writes one letter and said Adrain to meet
Veronica’s Mother because he believes that
Veronica is not mentally stable
● You create always what you
think of creating, nobody
tells you what to do in your
head or mind
“History is that certainty produced at the
point where the imperfection of memory meet
the inadequacies of documentation”
● Inadequacies is you only know what you told or
the other side you only told what you want to
know
● You create your own sense of an ending
“There is Unrest”
● What is Unrest? you only have an unrest in your
mind when you not sure about what is happening
otherwise you are at the peace.
● When you are at the peace you stop knowing
new things
● Tony is at unrest because what he thought and
what is there is difference and that is unrest that
he has to go through
Symbolic ending
● Ending is symbolic. Ending means How would you
come to know about anything that is told to you from
the side of the side of the story
● You get at the particular juncture and all the
characters has different perspectives so which is the
right one
● Ending of the particular juncture would be different
● So the Julian Barnes try to tell you that what
you think is not always what is. there is always
the other side which failed to look into because
we are convince about what is.
Memory
● When someone tell you to write something without telling
you what to write
● so you will have images in your mind of various kinds and
you try to join this images which would become your
memory because your images are your memories
● Good and Worst things in your mind
● Fragment of images
● Tony has fragments of all the characters who are in his life
● Everything that is come across your life you has in
impact in your life
● You start in a certain way you also end in a certain
way but that ending is an outcome of what happens
within that frame
Conclusion
● The text invites the reader to have a varied range
of interpretations.
● Every reading of the text provides newer
interpretations.
THANK YOU…..
