 What is Subaltern theory
 Eklavya as Subaltern Character in the play “Purpose”
 Karna’s Character in Mahabarata
 Marginalised character in Mahabharata
 Other marginalised character in “Hamlet”
 Marginalised character in the movie
 “Postcolonialism is the study of the after effects of
colonialism and imperialism.”
 The major conflict is about whether the nation’s have
actually come out of the colonial influence or not.
 In Marxist theory the civil sense of the term
“Subaltern” was first used by the Italian author
Antonio Gramsci.
 “ Subaltern means Someone with a low ranking in a
social, political and other hierarchy or it can also mean
someone who has been Marginalised. “
 Basically it is a technical term
 Based on deconstruction
 Depict through the cast, race, class, age etc..
 “Subaltern cannot speak”
 He was from low cast and
Nishada boy
 Arjuna was Arya boy
 So Eklavay can’t study
Archery from guru
Dronacharya
 So in the play he wants to
learn but because he was
not belongs to upper class ,
Drona not gave him a
knowledge about Archery
 “ I have Tries Hard Ever so Hard, Sir, to Learn by
myself .....But it Does seem Not possible , Sir to Learn
All by One’s our self”
Arjuna : “ An arya is an Arya! And a Nishaada is only a
low born Nishaada.”
Eklavya : “ pride in one’s cast more than in one’s power
to Do Good “
Arjuna : “ I Do not like you! I Dislike you! very much!
Eklavya : “ Hate is only another name for fear”
 Originally he was known as a
“sutaputra” major character
in the hindu epic
 Like Ekalaya, Dronacharya
denied to taught him
 Parshu ram taught him but
when he comes to know that
he is not Brahmin
 At that time parshu ram curse
to forgot everything because
he was Kshatriya
 Urmila is from famous
epic but you may don’t
find many instances that
describe her life and her
agony in Valmiki’s
Ramayana
 She always known as the
second daughter of King
Janka
 In the play there are many dialogues which are
reflection of Subaltern theory
 In the story we can see that Eklavaya’s aim is not wrong
he wants to protect animals. His aim is very pure.
So I have question in my mind “
why we have theory like
Subaltern theory?”
