1. Sample Letter of Motivation for university in Netherlands
Climate Change. We are responsible for this and climate change leads to
drastically negative impacts on agriculture, flooding and desertification. It is
a matter of grave concern for me and it has led me to this point in life. This
course on Modelling Atmospheric Pollution and Aerosol Cloud Interactions will
help me to contribute towards the environmental cause.
What I wish to study and why this program
I aspire to learn aerosol-cloud interaction modelling. I have started acquiring
basic knowledge about machine learning but working for a company and
studying at the same time is exhausting, hence I have decided to enrol for
the full time PhD.
During the time of time of MTech I have competed a subject of aerosol cloud
climate interaction by Dr Sinha sir and working in this field will also be
exciting.
Modelling helps us to understand the world by simulating real life conditions,
so that we can conduct the experiments which are impossible to conduct in
real life or lab. In these experiments/simulations, we can see the
interdependencies among these parameters formulate or parameterize
various dependencies. All these things motivate me to work in this field.
Why this university and this country
This is no ordinary course one can find at every institution across countries. I
have shortlisted a few and from them I have chosen this university for its
superior capabilities, study facilities, lab, research facility and, above all, the
finest faculty. I could not ask for anything better and I will consider it my
good fortune to gain admission. Netherlands is where this university is
located and it is a happy coincidence. I have always admired images of
Netherlands showin pristine countryside, crystal clear water and disciplined
people in cities. It is a different world. I shall certainly learn a lot more
besides my study course topics in a liberal, conducive, peaceful atmosphere.
Experience
After the completion of M-Tech, I joined a start-up as a weather modeller to
gain practical experience. Now I am doing weather forecasting for the same
company. For weather forecasting I am using WRF model and forcing it with
GFS data and weather station data in the initial conditions using 3DVar data
assimilation. I have tried MPAS for the weather forecasting but according to
one of my professor MPAS is not well tested as the WRF so I have continued
my work on the WRF model. Currently I am using 4DVar data assimilation to
assimilate satellite and radar data for the forecasting.
2. Classes/projects
For my BE Civil Engineering degree course I took on a project to develop
blocks for use in low cost housing. The focus was on developing blocks made
up of soil and cement mix. I demonstrated it and built a model house too.
I joined Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology,
Thiruvananthapuram, for M-Tech in Earth System Science. In IIST, for course
work, I studied the 8 subjects related to atmospheric science and 2 subjects
related to planetary geoscience. After one year of course work it was pretty
clear that I want to work in the modelling field. By considering my civil
engineering background, instead of working in the purely atmospheric
modelling, I chose hydrometeorological modelling for one year project of M-
Tech. At that time my guide Dr Chandrasekar sir introduced me to the WRF-
Hydro model for hydrometeorological modelling and sent me to the Water
Resource Department of Indian Institute of Remote Sensing Dehradun to
learn Hydrological modelling as no one was working in IIST in hydrological
modelling.
Leadership/community experience
During my civil engineering studies I took an active part in debates and
competition and led a team to carry out a survey of houses in slums and to
develop cost-effective, eco-friendly housing solutions.
During the lockdown, my husband and I united our neighbours and we took
on the task of running community kitchens for the poor and to provide other
assistance such as healthcare. It was the least we could do. My husband,
Muthu Aravind Raveendran is a project leader with GGS Engineering in
Chennai and I have a child. I realise how lucky I am and wanted to do
something for the community. My father is a retired health inspector and
owns a shopping complex. As such we are well off and consider it our
responsibility to serve the community.
Values I bring to the institution
It is easy to follow the beaten track. I would like to explore exciting, less
travelled roads and modelling of cloud-aerosol interaction is one such area
that will help me to use my studies and mental faculties to the utmost. I
hope to be a good student and bring pride to the institution. In future,
perhaps I will be able to repay it for all it has done for me.
Career goals and how this course will help
This course will help me to do something not just for my family or community
or city. It will help me serve humanity and Mother Earth. I hope to work in
topmost government institutions working in environment and climate change
and to do my best. Maybe ten years later I will occupy a senior post and will
be able to do still more. This course will help me to put my foot forward with
confidence and commitment.
