2. What is animal improvement?
A complex process that involves -
-controlled cultivation
-management
-production of domestic animals.
It includes the improvement of qualities considered
desirable by humans which is done by animal breeding
techniques and methods.
3. Production of improved breeds of domesticated animals by
improving their genotypes through selective mating.
4.
5. Inbreeding
-Mating animals of the same
breed.
-Increases homozygous.
-Development of pure line.
-Eliminates harmful
recessive genes.
-Accumulation of superior
genes and elimination of less
desirable genes.
-But continued inbreeding
reduces fertility and
productivity.
It's called inbreeding
depression.
8. Outcrossing
-Mating of animals within same
breed but having no common
ancestors.
-Inbreeding depression can be
overcome.
-Best method for animal that are
below average in productivity.
-Infuses vigor qnd vitality in the
offsprings..
Due to this, outcrossing of pure
animals is preferred over impure
ones.
9. Crossbreeding
-Two animals of different breed but of
same species mated together.
-The offsprings produced will have
dominant characters of both animals.
-Done to develop new superior breads
and also to improve the quality of local
breeds.
11. Interspecific Hybridization
-Mating of male and female of two
different species.
-Offspring has desired characters of
both species.
-The hybrids are sterile.
Some example of interspecific hybridization
