• Immediate awareness that we experience..
• Actions we do with our total control on them are part of

and then act accordingly..

• Storehouse of all our experiences and memories that are

• It is the stored information that we can recall..
• It is the information that is just below the information of
awareness or consciousness..

• Thoughts, memories, feelings and desires that are
uncontrolled..
• Unconscious is in depth of mind, below the level of
subconscious..
• They have a significant influence on our behavior..
• Our experiences that forms beliefs and fears..
8. Suppressed Desires
• Any desire that comes in our mind but we cease it..
• We control it and do not fulfill it..
• The desire is still there in our mind but suppressed..
• The desires could be immoral and unethical due to which
we would cease them and won’t act accordingly..
• Like the Oedipus complex and Electra complex
9. Psychoanalytical Criticism
• It is used to understand the unconscious elements in literary
texts..
• It doesn’t focus on text’s structure and form (structuralism
and formalism)..
• We focus on character’s behavior (conscious and
unconscious) through text..
• Personality of author is determined via text..
11. ID
• It is the source of all psychic/mental energy and is
present from birth..
• This component is completely unconscious..
• ID is driven by pleasure principle and requires immediate
gratification of desires..
• If ID is not satisfied the person gets anxiety, depression
or tension..
12. Ego
• It develops from ID and is based on reality principle..
• This component is completely conscious..
• It is the personality component that deals with the reality
and helps dealing with our desires..
• It balances the demands of ID and Super-ego according
to real life situations..
13. Super-ego
• It is related to our social and moral values that we acquire
from our society..
• This component is subconscious..
• It helps us understand and differentiate between what is
morally right and wrong..
• It provides guidelines for making judgements..
14. Oedipus and Electra Complex
Oedipus Complex:
• A boy/son’s sexual desire towards his mother..
Electra Complex
• A girl/daughter’s sexual desire towards her father..
